Just saw that #genAI models now have a "how to protect the environment" suggestion... which suggests to use different genAI models 😇🤣🤦
You want to know the best way to save energy and protect the environment?

  • do not use genAI (use your own brain, or your friends')
  • while you're at it, protest all the data centers that are getting built to support all that "energy-saving"…
screenshot of some genAI coding platform, it says "Help save energy and protect the environment: use the simplest model that's good enough"
with a bunch of models listed below it, of course, there is no option to "use my own brain" which would *actually* save energy and protect the environment
A mashup of the Drake meme and the brain meme where Drake looks away in disgust when the option to "save energy and protect the environment" is to use a bunch of different genAIs, but then he validates the last option, "your own brain"

Content warning: GenAI pushback

I have no compassion for people sharing their love of #genAI on here and not trying to understand the arguments they get in the inevitable push back (inevitable, because the #Fediverse seems to be the last bastion of defense against that invasive slop ❤️).

Out of the many issues I have with #genAI, I chose to focus on the most German one: cost.

The Segway is here to stay, you know! Once someone invents something, the cat's out of the bag! Oh you don't use a Segway? Watch out, or this amazing new technology will leave you (slightly) behind! You'd better invest now you know! This technology is poised to revolutionize personal transportation! If you don't get in early, you'll never catch up and make the big bucks (unless you can manage a brisk jog or have a car or something). I don't know what they're teaching in PE these days, but they definitely need to start teaching how to ride a Segway! It's completely intuitive, you see! Should athletes be allowed to ride Segways around the track instead of running laps? Of course! After all, sports are already starting to shift to Segway leagues. These things *are* the future! They're totally safe,* even around cliffs!
*Remember to always wear your helmet when riding, and be prepared to land on your feet like a cat if user error results in an unexpected temporary levitation event. Segway, inc. is not liable for damages caused by failure to deploy superhuman reflexes at a moment's notice.

... Be prepared.. this was in an ad for a neuroscience workshop... Like a serious workshop...
I cannot understand how any neuroscientists could have made this and then looked at it and then thought it would be OK to use??

I think this is supposed to illustrate the concept of fiber photometry in a mouse brain, but instead it shows three things that look like laser sabers (supposedly the fibers) aiming at some amorphous pink blobs (supposedly the brain) in what seems to be a deformed rat/mice hybrid head...

Thinking about some things that @… said in another thread, and as someone who advocates against AI hype and against the use of most generative AI in most circumstances, I feel it's important to say: many of the ethical issues with using generative AI mirror almost directly the ethical issues with living/working on land stolen by colonists, except that they're less harmful.
Arguments like "well we don't really know whose work it's ripping off this time" and "artists that post their art online know it's going to be looked at; this is the same thing" and "well it's inevitable and everyone's doing it so it's unreasonable to make a big deal about it" directly echo arguments like "well now we don't know whose land it was any more exactly" (yes, we do; you can literally go look up the website of their descendants), or "the natives weren't really using the land anyways", or "it's all in the past now, and it's unavoidable." That unavoidable one is actually somewhat true of using stolen land, at least compared to LLM usage.
If you can see through those lies in the case of AI hype but choose not to do so in the case of colonialism, that says something about your priorities and allegiances.
This is not at all a call for people to talk less about AI; rather it's a call for those who take opposing AI hype seriously to look around and make some noise about other injustices too (I realize many of you already do this).

I like Tchaikovsky's views on genAI, from the there's no "I" in it and the Chinese Room argument to what he says about the artistic process. Oh, and his advice to young writers / artists: "I mean... don't use it?"
I guess it's a very Mastodon friendly interview:

Mid- (ongoing) -pandemic "back to the office" mandates and "use AI" mandates are two sides of the same coin that illustrate just how much "technology" happens at the whims of the CEO class, and any description of generative AI as an "inevitable" or "here to stay" technology that doesn't account for that is propaganda.
