When we chose our heat pump 16 years ago, the choices for heating were oil, propane, or electric. All of those were costly, and we also needed to add A/C. Air-source heat pumps weren't really available, but geothermal was. So we paid $17K in 2009 dollars and that was after almost $10K in government rebates. We learned a lot about heat pumps vs. traditional fuels.
