View of a large glaciated mountain massif rising up behind a final step of alpine forest beyond which only rock & ice remains. Only the upper third near the peaks is still covered in full ice, deep seracs visible in some parts. Numerous small waterfalls in the rock below and on the side slopes. The vegetation in the lower parts is all in beautiful autumn colors. A small group of yellow larches among swiss pines, bronze brown dried grasses and heather, red dots of blueberry bushes. Indonesia may soon lose its last glaciers
Asia's last tropical glaciers can be found near Puncak Jaya, Papua, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. But it is unlikely that they will survive until the end of this decade. Over the past 44 years, the peak has lost 97% of its ice and four of its glaciers. Its remaining two glaciers, Carstensz and the East Northwall Firn glacier, are expected to disappear by 2030, adding Indonesia (alongside Venezuela and Slovenia) to the list of countries that have lost all of their glaciers.
