#GreekRomanArt #Hermes #Mercurius

Marble statue of Hermes wearing small chlamys and winged sandals; caduceus in left hand; left hand and much of legs restored. The statue is a 1st century CE Roman copy of a famous type created in the school of the Greek sculptor Praxiteles in the fourth century BCE.

Together with a statue of Apollo, this sculpture once framed the central doorway of the gallery in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

Adding to the heatwave is this callipygous "Marine Venus", who is wringing out her hair after a dip in the sea. Wish I could join her for a swim.

A late #BumDayMonday today. This one is missing a head, but his bum makes all but up for it ๐Ÿ˜‰
#GreekRomanArt

Photograph of a Roman marble torso, circa 1st century BCE-1st century CE. Depicted lifesized, standing in contrapposto with his weight on his right leg, the left slightly advanced, with both arms lowered, the left pulled slightly back, the lithe figure with softly-modelled musculature, his long serpentine tendrils falling onto each shoulder, preserving a tree trunk support along the right thigh, and a smaller rectangular strut at the back of the left thigh. The position of the arms suggests thaโ€ฆ

It's hot here today, so best go to the baths, like Venus does with her lover Mars and his nice lil tush.
They can be found in the Therme of Diocletian.

A late #PhallusThursday because I spent the day with a friend celebrating her birthday.
I am supplicating Hermes to grant her good luck, great fortune, and swift travels in the next year of her life, like this traveller is likely asking Hermes for a smooth journey. Hermes seems very excited about it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Red-figure vase painting of a man, likely a traveller judging from his chlamys cloak and walking stick, honouring a herm of Hermes. A herm is a simple statue of Hermes and sometimes other gods with a head and an erect phallus at the appropriate height.

This phallus belongs to a woman: one of Dionysos' maenads shows him her interpretation of a horny satyr. Maenads usually have first-hand experience with that.

Red-figure vase painting. The god Dionysos is seated, holding his thyrsos staff. In front of him, a maenad is acting, wearing phallus trunks, a costume to depict satyrs in theatre.

Byzantine Circular Pyxis depicting the Judgement of Paris. We see Hermes, Aphrodite, Athene. Hermes holds his kerykeion staff and the golden apple "for the fairest". He turns away from a nude Aphrodite who is crafted with labia. Beside her, Athene, fully clothed, throws her a disapproving look.
