Three passengers have died and others are ill after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic,
prompting a WHO alert.
The rare rodent-borne virus can cause lethal lung or kidney syndromes,
with fatality rates up to 38% in some forms,
-- and has no specific cure.

Good article here on the latest about the #hantavirus sicknesses on the cruise ship near Cape Verde.
"Those most at risk are likely to be the ship’s other passengers. For now, the plan is for the Hondius to continue to the Canary Islands, Van Kerkhove says, where Spain will conduct a thorough epidemiological investigation and disinfect the ship.
All the researchers involved stress the challenge of investigating an outbreak on a ship in international waters with so many countries involved. “I think the response has been a wonderful global collaborative effort,” Blumberg says. “It shows the value of networks and people speaking to each other.””

Because ~25% of the world’s seafarers and shipping crew is from the #Philippines 🇵🇭 I wasn’t surprised to learn that majority of the crew of MV Hondius, the Antarctic cruise ship currently suffering an outbreak of #hantavirus with 3 deaths so far, are Filipino.

This is an interesting tidbit of information from Henry.
"“The global hypothesis is that the infection, the exposure to the rat feces, or whatever in the dry area that they were in, happened before they arrived on the cruise ship,” she said. “It was a couple from the Netherlands. So then they both became ill, whether they both had the initial exposure, or whether the wife was exposed to her husband once he became ill.””
Specifically: ”the dry area”
Reports are that it was a bird watching expedition to a landfill that is the primary suspect for the source of the exposure. Which, in my mind, means the hantavirus can spread through contact with dirt either on the bottom of a shoe, or on particles in the wind in a dry dusty environment.
That doesn't quite give me confidence that it is not “airborne”... but… ok.
