60 years ago tonight, the velvet underground at summit high school in new jersey, opening for the myddle class, both acts' 1st proper shows. sometimes called the VU's debut, rob norris’s classic scene report, “i was a velveteen” (from kicks #1) mentions they’d just been fired from cafe wha?, so maybe there was one earlier, too? some great local coverage, too!

just remembered this 1985 photo (from a SEVA benefit) of weir with jonathan richman, who looks like he's trying to figure out how he ended up onstage with a grateful dead. incidentally, weir is singing "ripple," i think maybe the first time he sang a garcia/hunter song outside the dead.

true story: partly because of when it came out, but mostly because of the dreamy backdrops from old LPs & the gorgeous foreground guitar melodies, @…'s "how to rescue things" was/is an instant modern holiday classic for wintery nights.

got even more out of a 2nd night of SML at sultan room & relieved they had a whole other bag of ecstatic meshed peaks. focused on booker stardrum (& how his toweled snare meant that it never overpowered the bloops' attack) & guitarist gregory uhlmann (easily the subtlest up there, playing little staccato figures that i assumed last night were loops). #nyc

50 years ago now-ish (maybe), a jerry garcia band studio session for “reflections” at his master’s wheels in san francisco, with a bunch of unusual song selections, including his earliest elizabeth cotten songs, probably with larry knectel on keys. somehow missed in the recent @… deluge. could be october, but that's when they were flirting with tim henson. <…

50 years ago tonight, the jerry garcia band in berkeley, with an opening set by the rowan brothers. not absolutely certain peter rowan was playing was his bros. at this point, but still a huge bummer to me that he & garcia never performed together again after ’74, despite sharing several bills. now “garcialive vol. 12”:
