There's occasionally something interesting posted under the #history hashtag, but so much of what comes across my feed this way is AI slop.

Datini Letters. Geospatial Explorer
Francesco di Marco Datini's merchant correspondence network
#history

A dark-themed interactive map of the medieval western Mediterranean showing 14th-century merchant letter routes as curved arcs coloured from cyan (fast, 0–5 days) through yellow to red (30+ days). Short land routes between Tuscan cities glow cyan; longer sea routes to Barcelona and Majorca burn orange and red, revealing the unpredictability of medieval maritime travel.

Hooks from George Washington's tackle box. During a summer lull in the drafting of the Constitution in 1787 he escaped Philadelphia's "foul airs" by going trout fishing, as one does. Journal entry from one outing: "in the evening fished, not very successfully." #constitution #washington #history #trout #fishing #hooks

Schlangenhaus (16th century, Werdenberg, St. Gallen)
#FensterFreitag #History #Switzerland

View of the wooden gable of a 16th century rustic house. The planks have been painted in reddish brown and the areas around the windows decorated with gray ornaments. The painted tails of two large snakes are running down along the inside of the overhanging roof. Clear azure sky.

On a withered branch
A crow has alighted:
Nightfall in autumn.

Don't forget that you can also kill waterfowl by hiding under hollowed-out gourds disguised to look like rocks, then pulling the birds under when they land. Beautifully illustrated in this 1578 engraving by Cornelis Galle (full image is at the Rijksmuseum). #geese #history #hunting #gourds #squash #art rijksmuseum.nl/nl/collectie/ob

Since I mentioned it: Hampi was the capital of Vijayanagara empire 14-16 Century CE and is believed to be the world's most prosperous city in that era. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has some of the most stunning architecture and sculptures you'll ever see. Absolutely worth a visit.

Walked around Valley Forge National Historical Park last week and was surprised to find hundreds of mason bees nesting *inside* the soldier huts. I'd always assumed they required exterior wood, ideally with direct sun for most of the day. There were also hundreds of Houdini flies lurking around. #ValleyForge #pennsylvania #osmia #bees #insects #history #biology

Wallpaper at Fraunces Tavern Museum in NYC depicting General Washington arriving in Boston. The full 49-foot, 32-panel, 360-color "Views of the American War of Independence" is still produced by Zuber & Cie (est. 1797) in Rixheim, France, using 2,300 (!) wood blocks carved between 1834 and 1852. It takes a full year to print and is likely the world's most expensive wallpaper ($100,000?). The blocks themselves are classified as Historic Monuments by the French Ministry of Culture. #france #history #art #nyc #newyork #museum #wallpaper #woodblock #boston #war #independence #250th

I've been listening to podcasts about the Civil War and have been struck by how almost everyone mispronounces Ku Klux Klan, saying "CLUE" for the first part even though there is no "L". Among the offenders are commentators in Ken Burn's The Civil War, everyone on NPR news, and, if memory serves me, characters in the movie, BlacKkKlansman, which is astounding. I found an image from the 1930s that shows that it's not just a modern problem. Drives me nuts. #CivilWar #KuKluxKlan #KluKluxKlan #kkk #linquistics #language #history #spelling #racism #pennsylvania
