In 2026, if someone said, "the call is coming from inside the house”, would it still be applicable from a horror-inducing perspective, or would it be nullified by the obvious, "well duh, cell phones can make calls from anywhere!”?

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systemsI've finished reading "The Shining" by Stephen King yesterday. I don't think the title nor the author need any introduction. I just wanted to say that the movie (Kubrick's version) ls less scary. I guess a movie can put you behind somebody's eyes, but only a #book can truly put you inside somebody's head, and for hours.

The protagonist is a mourning British ace enby with autism and depression and the story gets way dark with all the problems one might face with all those things, but it gets it, too. Really gets how hard it can be and takes you there and asks, "OK, what now?" And it does it all with a horror twist.
I bought it as a ebook from the publisher's site months ago, knowing my bookclub was reading it this month. I wish I could tell you all where to get your copy, but the publisher's site closed. It's worth the effort to find it on ebay or if you're in the UK, you might be able to find it in the shops.

I don't want to spoil it, but I really liked how the characters were written and want to read more from this author. I wish their Bluesky account was bridged so I can find out what they've written/are coming out with next.
