Early Modern Europe reacted with dismay to the potato, which was believed to be poisonous and to incite wickedness. Hence the German word for it - "kartoffel" - a compound of Karotte (carrot) and Teufel (the Devil)

Flatbreads were invented by a little old lady in Leningrad. She called them "flat" breads because they could be cooked in the cramped kitchen of a Soviet-era flat, which was too small to accommodate a traditional Eastern European brick oven in which full-size bread could be baked.
This is why in American English they are sometimes known as apartmentbreads.
