I've finally finished pushing the latest update for #Gentoo Distribution Kernels, and requested their stabilization. This includes upstream releases 7.0.9, 6.18.32, 6.12.90 and 6.6.140; and Gentoo patch bumps 6.1.173_p1, 5.15.207_p1 and 5.10.256_p1.
All of these contain the v5 #Fragnesia patch. And yes, while the exploit is in the wild, upstream still hasn't merged a fix to the mainline kernel, let alone all the LTS branches. Of course, the patch keeps covering more holes, but it would really be preferable to do that as a followup instead of leaving people vulnerable and forcing us to keep rebasing it.
They also include a few reverts in 6.18 and 6.6 for broken PowerPC backports that upstream didn't apparently test. 🤷
We're doing our best, but I'd still recommend running the latest 7.0.x kernel, or LTS 6.18.x, because upstream is far from reliable with the backports.

Does someone have any pointers for a crashing system?
I suspect that it is related to the GPU, especially under heavy load.
It is an Intel Xe GPU in a Dell Latitude 7450 notebook.

I have installed Arch and alpine on my laptop. I'm looking for a suitable OS that boot the device quickly. I can't see that much different between Arch and windows (2~3 min). Alpine is kind of helpful to the situation with ~1 min boot time.

General Question. the latest CVE in Linux was fixed across all recent releases. how do you "do" that in git? I mean the fixing across versions. Do you implement it in the most recent version and then you cherry pick it up?
Are there best practices? can anyone recommend a Video?

How many is a lot?
Yeah, lots.
Despite having spent lots of time trying to create meaningful directory names it's still not easy to always find a photo I'm looking for.
What would actually be a USEFUL tool for AI would be something that I could run locally which could examine each of my photos and build some kind of free-text database of their contents which I can then grep.
But as far as I can tell nothing along those lines exists. Why have AI tools spent so much time trying to create faked photos and not producing something actually valuable?

Tech companies seem to be running a cycle:
1. They don't realize how much they're relying on volunteer-maintained projects.
2. Something bad happens and they suddenly decide they need to support this critical infrastructure, often by hiring some people behind it and making its maintenance part of their dayjob.
3. They realize they could save money by exploiting volunteers to maintain these #OpenSource projects. They lay workers off or move them to other projects.
4. Go to 1.
Except now they're trying to replace workers with slop machines, deskill everyone and basically they're not only poisoning the well, but killing the whole water cycle. And they're realizing that they just gave the bad people a tool that can quickly find just how vulnerable their critical infrastructure is.
Really appreciate the long-term thinking there.

So you read about #CopyFail, and are like… owww, shit. But then you see that it was responsibly disclosed after being fixed in main, we had releases since, they went stable in #Gentoo (over other #security fixes), so we should be good, right?
Except that it turns out that after it has been fixed in mainline, nobody bothered actually backporting the fix to all the LTS branches. And it doesn't apply cleanly (#Gentoo #Linux
Greg Kroah-Hartman: "If you look there are thousands of unfixed CVEs in the older LTS kernels right now, and if distros or users that rely on those older branches wish to see those resolved, they need to provide working backports to us to apply, as our first attempt did not work (which is why they are unfixed in those branches.)"
Really asking for a "Pray tell us", given that nobody actually bothered disclosing the problem to downstreams and that the commit message was hiding it.
Either way, apparently the great LLM-backed patch backporting process that #NVidia is so proud of doesn't really work. Upstream doesn't really care about #LTS branches, and they should be considered insecure by default.
