Just rescued a water damaged laptop for a friend. The Laptop wouldn't boot anymore. So I took out the SSD and attached it via a USB adapter to my Linux Laptop and created a QEMU KVM virtual machine booting this device. After a bit of sweating Windows came up and I'm able to login to rescue the data inside the operating system.

If you are switching to #Linux but not ready to commit, best thing you can do is look for linux programs that also run on windows and learn how they work. Replace MS Office with LibreOffice, replace Photshop with GIMP, replace Outlook with Thunderbird, etc;
When in doubt, google for "linux alternative to..." will give you an idea of what to install.

Okay, I have never in all my years seen a piece of consumer hardware that advertised #Linux support on the front of the box. Yes, I've seen it in small text on the back or side of the box, or in the instruction manual, or somewhere else out of the way, but this is unambiguously "we support linux!". Wild.

A small tweak for the Windows 11 box. I don't want to click start and then the power option and then shutdown. I want something similar to my #linux machines.
I created a shortcut and made a shortcut on the taskbar. Simple icon change too.
Command was shutdown /s /t 0. That does an immediate shutdown. Not the prettiest, but it works.

I was watching a game via streaming on my browser, and my CPU was running at 78–80 °C (it's an old laptop).
If you inspect the page in Firefox and select the "Network" tab, you can find the video's URL. All you have to do is open that URL in mpv, and your computer will run much more smoothly and, in my case, with a CPU temperature 12 degrees lower.

Image is a bit blurry, but from starting up the new #linux laptop, check for software, install updates (includes kernel update) it was under three and a quarter minutes and includes time waiting for me to respond.
Work Win11 machine can take hours for simple updates to my installed apps and don't get me started on how long it takes for it to update system software.

I'll be getting my main laptop back soon, on which—for reasons that aren't relevant here—I've had to temporarily install Windows.
Now I'm faced with the dilemma of choosing a distro. Since my ThinkPad runs Arch Linux, I'm wondering if it's time to reinstall Fedora.
What I do know for sure is that it's time to give Wayland and Hyprland a try, after years of using i3wm.

FYI: If you used `gdmflexiserver` to launch a new session from something like `sway`, *this no longer exists upstream*.
Remedy: I switched to `lightdm`, which has `dm-tool` (which lets you switch to the greeter).

Ich nutze nun Linux seit 2 jahren richtig intensiv und hab mich auf Linux Mint festgelegt. Läuft auch alles soweit super, ok bis auf ein paar Probleme, die aber nicht mit Linux Mint selbst zutun haben.
Nur eine kleine Sache, wo ich echt Probleme hab, das ist Desktopverknüpfungen bei Programmen, k.a was ich da falsch mache. Wenn ich eine normale verknüpftung mach, die aus dem Dateimanager erstelle, dann funtzt das nicht.

I've finally finished pushing the latest update for #Gentoo Distribution Kernels, and requested their stabilization. This includes upstream releases 7.0.9, 6.18.32, 6.12.90 and 6.6.140; and Gentoo patch bumps 6.1.173_p1, 5.15.207_p1 and 5.10.256_p1.
All of these contain the v5 #Fragnesia patch. And yes, while the exploit is in the wild, upstream still hasn't merged a fix to the mainline kernel, let alone all the LTS branches. Of course, the patch keeps covering more holes, but it would really be preferable to do that as a followup instead of leaving people vulnerable and forcing us to keep rebasing it.
They also include a few reverts in 6.18 and 6.6 for broken PowerPC backports that upstream didn't apparently test. 🤷
We're doing our best, but I'd still recommend running the latest 7.0.x kernel, or LTS 6.18.x, because upstream is far from reliable with the backports.

Zero days since the #Linux #kernel made a security release of all branches, containing exactly one patch, except for 6.12 which was skipped for no clear reason, and there doesn't seem to be anything about that on the ml. And now I'm scratching my head if I should do a backport for #Gentoo, or wait for the release, or perhaps there was a good reason why the patch was added to every other LTS branch but not 6.12…

Well, @… found #Linux #kernel and older doesn't do anything at all. I'm going to take an educated guess that 6.12 failed to build, but this didn't get our LLM backport experts to think that something is wrong and they just pushed it to 6.6 and older where it didn't fail to build.
