Work Win11 machine can take hours for simple updates to my installed apps and don't get me started on how long it takes for it to update system software.

Now I'm faced with the dilemma of choosing a distro. Since my ThinkPad runs Arch Linux, I'm wondering if it's time to reinstall Fedora.
What I do know for sure is that it's time to give Wayland and Hyprland a try, after years of using i3wm.

@wydamn@social.linux.pizzaIf you are switching to #Linux but not ready to commit, best thing you can do is look for linux programs that also run on windows and learn how they work. Replace MS Office with LibreOffice, replace Photshop with GIMP, replace Outlook with Thunderbird, etc;
When in doubt, google for "linux alternative to..." will give you an idea of what to install.

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systemsI've finally finished pushing the latest update for #Gentoo Distribution Kernels, and requested their stabilization. This includes upstream releases 7.0.9, 6.18.32, 6.12.90 and 6.6.140; and Gentoo patch bumps 6.1.173_p1, 5.15.207_p1 and 5.10.256_p1.
All of these contain the v5 #Fragnesia patch. And yes, while the exploit is in the wild, upstream still hasn't merged a fix to the mainline kernel, let alone all the LTS branches. Of course, the patch keeps covering more holes, but it would really be preferable to do that as a followup instead of leaving people vulnerable and forcing us to keep rebasing it.
They also include a few reverts in 6.18 and 6.6 for broken PowerPC backports that upstream didn't apparently test. 🤷
We're doing our best, but I'd still recommend running the latest 7.0.x kernel, or LTS 6.18.x, because upstream is far from reliable with the backports.

@maxheadroom@hub.uckermark.socialJust rescued a water damaged laptop for a friend. The Laptop wouldn't boot anymore. So I took out the SSD and attached it via a USB adapter to my Linux Laptop and created a QEMU KVM virtual machine booting this device. After a bit of sweating Windows came up and I'm able to login to rescue the data inside the operating system.

I created a shortcut and made a shortcut on the taskbar. Simple icon change too.
Command was shutdown /s /t 0. That does an immediate shutdown. Not the prettiest, but it works.

Ich hab keinen Schimmer woran es liegen kann, hab auch die Mirros gewechselt und auch einiges nachgelesen, nichts hat geholfen.

If you inspect the page in Firefox and select the "Network" tab, you can find the video's URL. All you have to do is open that URL in mpv, and your computer will run much more smoothly and, in my case, with a CPU temperature 12 degrees lower.

@gse@norden.socialIch nutze nun Linux seit 2 jahren richtig intensiv und hab mich auf Linux Mint festgelegt. Läuft auch alles soweit super, ok bis auf ein paar Probleme, die aber nicht mit Linux Mint selbst zutun haben.
Nur eine kleine Sache, wo ich echt Probleme hab, das ist Desktopverknüpfungen bei Programmen, k.a was ich da falsch mache. Wenn ich eine normale verknüpftung mach, die aus dem Dateimanager erstelle, dann funtzt das nicht.
