I’ve heard reports exactly like this in • every • single • election • since 2004. And every time, when somebody finally manages to get to the bottom of it, it turns out the culprit is garbage UI design — not the machine secretly changing votes (because why would it •show• the user if it’s actually cheating?!).
But these breathless stories about touchscreen voting aren’t going die unless touchscreen voting itself dies — because it’s a terrible idea.
Paper ballots, marked directly by the voter themselves, validated and counted in an optical scanner. It’s not rocket science, folks.

Manchester Climate Scientists call on the new PM not to drill for oil
Kevin Anderson and colleagues at the University Tyndall Centre have written an open letter to Andy Burnham calling on him not to agree drilling in the Rosebank and Jackdaw marine oil fields. They point out his leadership in commissioning work from them that led to setting of Greater Manchester’s ambitious, Paris-compliant carbon budget. They say that allowing more oil extraction would betray that…

We bring you a series of three workshops looking at the implications of the National Emergency Briefings for Greater Manchester. What does it mean for us? Who needs to act, and how do we pressure them to do the right thing? The National Emergency Briefing screenings have been a great way to being together and share current expert knowledge on the existential ecological crises facing us all.
