Oh, masto.globaleas.org generates a relevant amount of load on my (small) Mastodon instance with automated data that is not really usable in Germany. I'm afraid I'll have to defederate for the first time for technical reasons, because the content/benefit/load ratio doesn't fit. 😟 #mastoadmin @GWESOfficial@masto.globaleas.org

Occasionally mastodon servers go down. When they do I wish there was a more clear way to communicate with users.
Recently I thought maybe I should write a script to pull the list of emails from the server so I could occasionally message them. Is that something that would make sense for downtime messages?

This is obviously bot activity, hoping to get as federated as possible very quickly for some reason....😬

Just saw https://wedistribute.org/2024/06/maven-mastodon-posts/ so that is maven.ly and heymaven.com added to the blocklist then. It turns out I'd rather be able to use Mastodon and the fediverse without having everything on my profile scraped and "categorised" by some AI technology.
As for the private messages being somehow scraped, that presents a trust issue of an entirely different kind - how do you know they will only stay on the instances with the users the messages were sent between?

I do not understand how I have almost 8 gb of status data in my database for gardenstate.social. in the last 7 days it grew 8k? at 8k a week my server would have to run for 973 weeks to get to 8 gb.
I often run the cli script that removes unreferenced statuses. I feel like this should be much smaller!

Not exactly sure if it's immediately beneficial to me, but just in case there's something critical there, I did it as soon as I was able to.
Any Mastodon Admins running the main branch should probably do the same if they haven't yet.

...and phpc.social is back from the reboot. Secondary queue workers needed a bit of extra nudging but are online now and queues have cleared, so y'all can return to your normally scheduled posting :)

I think I'm going to turn on content retention to clear out posts older than 6 months.
Anything older than that is just an inaccurate view of the Fediverse at this point, I think.

After 9 months, I FINALLY follow enough people to have a "decent" Trending page with 6-7 posts!😅
It sucks that single user instances have to deal with this issue, but it's unfortunately how Mastodon decided to build the feature. It does leave me wondering though, if it could be changed to federate "Favorites" or, if it's too heavy on the servers, make it an option to turn on or off as wanted?
I don't know if it's possible, but I just know the Trending feature on single-user instances are almost completely useless most of the time.😩

The fact that there's no plans for moderation expansion is quite depressing.
I feel terrible for the Mastodon admins that feel they are stuck with this project and have to do "manual" moderation for thousands of users across 23,000 instances and hundreds of thousands of posts a day....🤦‍♂️

Well well....I'm PLEASANTLY surprised by Oliphant pulling his advocation for .art being involved in his blocklists and no longer even hosting ANY Tier besides Tier 0 or the "DNI" list!
That means I'm no longer on "Oliphant's Tier 3 blocklist" for lies by .art...because it no longer exists!

Well, I FINALLY figured out what happened to the dozen or so followers I lost earlier in the week.
Basically, I was in the process of running a specific command on my instance to remove any "dead/deleted" accounts from other instances that I was still hanging onto their "ghost profiles". Since I have a few followers that enjoy migrating quite a bit, the command cleared those deleted accounts out of the system, removing them from my follower count.
Therefore, nothing was lost and I didn't "do anything" to force anyone to want to unfollow me.
WHEW! I REALLY thought I'd done something to piss off a dozen folks at the same time.
Glad to see that's not the case.
Tagging some Fedi/Admin tags just in case something like this happens to anyone else and they are dumbfounded.

Anyone have any idea what could cause federated instances to *not* pull in profile pics and headers?
I am running a separate Sharkey (Misskey fork) instance and there's a few examples of this happening.
I have CDN with Cloudflare and that seems to work. The "remote caching" feature on Sharkey is turned off. I DO have Authorized Fetch on (maybe this is the issue?) However, both my instance and another instance have issues pulling icons and headers both ways (Mine doesn't show up on certain instances either)
Most of the stuff that I talked about here, I've just done today, so it COULD be that it just needs time to update, but I am unsure right now.

I know I've beat this horse into the ground, but....I really wish there were more third party Mastodon Admin tools.
There's a couple. One for sure, I've heard about another but I couldn't find it again.
However, there's nothing that I know of, that will let you automatically remove entire hashtags of content from your instance or keywords.
Some contributors are building moderation tools, but I don't think it includes automation like this. Kinda weird that Mastodon Devs expect all of us moderators and admins to visually encounter offending content before removing it. That's SO weird... "If you can't see the Loli content, it doesn't exist!!!" Makes no sense....😳
