Boundary-preserving continuum of synaesthesia and related phenomena. The continuum ranges from ordinary multisensory integration and shared cross-modal correspondences to cultural/metaphorical and trained synaesthesia-like mappings and, at the most diagnostically specific end, congenital, developmental, acquired, or highly stable synaesthesia. The arrow indicates increasing evidential demands rather than a necessary developmental progression.
