Octopus has launched a tariff add-on in France that uses the smart meter to dynamically control hot water tanks (which are very common) by sending supplier-specific tariff tables to the meter - a first. Customers can save €27 per year with the peak/off-peak tariff (or €45 if on a flat tariff).
