Sometimes I reminisce of the times past. I go all the way to my youth, back when I believed that there are more important things in life than the railways.
Russia remains anchored tot he past in their reliance on railways and primitive logistics.
Ukraine demonstrates the power of a functioning road system as one simple and obvious benefit of embracing a European (modern world) approach to transit.
This translates into battlefield strategy for Ukraine to dominate, even with much smaller numbers.

NS International Railways tries to make international rail travel even harder. Screenshot by my daughter, travelling from Barcelona to Rotterdam today. The app is informing her that the train from Paris to Rotterdam leaves on the same platform at Gare du Lyon where the train from Barcelona arrives. Not really. It leaves from a different station (Gare du Nord), about half an hour away by RER city train. 🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦
Today is the anniversary of America's time zones. Before the railways forced standardization, every town had local time, more or less based on solar time. That was chaos.
England actually had railway time decades earlier.
