ICYMI Another handbrake turn in research management, this time Aotearoa New Zealand under Christopher Luxon's National party coalition.
"New Zealand’s largest source of funding through competitive grants, the Endeavour Fund, remains stagnant at NZ$245 million but has *canceled all applications for the 2026 funding round to “reduce the operational burden of applying for funding”* during the mergers of Crown Research Institutes."

Useful piece at The BMJ, about covid messing with T cells etc.
Depressing that there's still so much denial in this area. Anthony Leonardi was trying to raise awareness of T cell damage back in 2021. (Difficult to make head or tail of his relentlessly non-layperson explanations, but he was at least talking about it.)

#today I lunched with a friend which was good, but seemed to be spinning my wheels in the sand on my #research #modelling which was bad.
But I think that I may have had a little breakthrough, and…
Standing up to Trump's assault on #research requires solidarity. ARL, ACRL, SSP, STM, and AUPresses issued a joint statement & request for feedback on next steps. Share your ideas!
The new #Compendium is here, and it’s more than just data. [Part 2]
While every NREN is unique, we’re united by a shared mission: delivering interlinked core services that power #Research & #Education
📣 Starting today: Science Maps. Bibliometrics between understanding and visualization
Together with Marcus John, I organize a small series on science mapping for our workgroup "WG Visualization" at Competence Network Bibliometrics. We hop to gether traditional, current, and critical perspectives on one of the most established and iconic forms of visualizing data in #Bibliometrics and #NetworkAnalysis.
More talks will be announced soon!
Today, Katy Börner will kickoff our series with a presentation about "Mapping and Modeling Science, Technology, and Education". You can find further info and registration under the following link:

Interesting! though sounds like this hasn't been tested in actual people yet.
In future, these nanoparticles could for example be an ingredient in a nasal spray.
"The glycosystem is a specially designed particle that mimics natural sugars found on human cells. These sugars, known as polysialosides, are made of repeating units of sialic acid - structures that viruses often target to begin infection. By copying this structure, the synthetic molecule acts as a decoy, binding to the virus's spike protein and preventing it from attaching to real cells. ...
"Tests on human lung cells showed a 98.6% reduction in infection when the molecule was present. ...
"This breakthrough could pave the way for antiviral nasal sprays, surface disinfectants, and treatments to protect vulnerable groups, offering a new line of defense against Covid-19 and future pandemics."
Dr Sumati Bhatia of Swansea University is "main corresponding author and research supervisor". Looked her up and she's been working on using "glycomaterials" to lock onto other pathogens too, like flu, herpes and pseudomonas.

#today working through the #NewScientist article backlog in my open tabs right now (the articles snuck out early this week!). And working on two parts of my #research: prep for the July house-in-a-lab time, and progress on the #modelling.
