Feels good to watch a serious person in charge of NASA. Possibly the only one in this government.

It started with a headline in the Guardian, some old memory of Minitel made me click. I stopped reading after I read about Félicette. A cat that went into space and came back alive.

I have no idea what #musk has been huffing but clearly no one is willing to tell him no. #spacex have developed a really cool re-usable launch system but it seems like hubris to claim managing data centres in space gives you some sort of competitive advantage. Aside from making hardware swaps impossible…

A rubbish challenge: how do we dump space junk? Modern life depends on space-based infrastructure, but there’s a lot of junk orbiting alongside working spacecraft. Katherine Courtney and Alice Gorman talk to Margaret Harris about the danger of #SpaceDebris – and what we need to do about it: https://physicsworld.com/a/a-rubbish-challenge-how-do-we-dump-space-junk/ (looong).
It is legitimately exciting that 4 humans might start on a journey around the Moon today!
Godspeed to all of them but especially The Big Unit* Canadian Jeremy Hansen!!

Now that Musk has offloaded Twitter and his AI experiments to SpaceX, he can be sure the government will bail it out when the AI bubble pops. The government's defense industry depends upon SpaceX for access to space.
This is probably the main reason for the "sale" transferring money from one of Musk's bank accounts to another of Musk's bank accounts.
The AI price bubble popping could have wiped out xAI and thus Twitter with it, but now it's cushioned against that by contracts with a government who can't afford to allow their only real space access to go bust.
So he can subsidize his failing AI business and his unprofitable media-manipulation efforts at Twitter with his government-protected failing exploding space-rocket project.
All protected by the lie which the media keep repeating uncritically that it makes any sense at all to have data centers in space.
What a great businessman.

Amazing how a demonstrably bad idea can still pull in massive funding.
SpaceX's orbiting data center is one such idea. Space isn't "cold", it's a vacuum, the same thing that makes high-performance insulated tumblers work so well. In orbit, shedding heat will be a bigger problem than any faced on earth, such as supplying electricity.

Pretty sobering read. i am excited humanity is going back to the moon and proud that a Canadian astronaut is getting a chance!
Losing them would be a huge setback for the prestige and trust in the USA space program, but also a symptom of long standing problems.
I wonder if the Canadian Space Agency would reconsider whether it wanted to continue with NASA. It's clear there is a lot of concern even inside NASA about the culture.

If China was a democratic country then perhaps you could say the roles of the cold war had somehow reversed, with China being the obvious technological leader in the world, while the USA tries desperately to hold on to its empire, and relevance through naked aggression.
But going to an english-language chinese news site and seeing talk of spacewalks and space stations really drives home how history has kind of flipped.
