Folks, I don’t normally report spam, mostly because by the time I see it, @… has it under control. However, the current wave of #spam is far greater than normal, and moderators are trying hard to keep up with it.
Please consider being a more active participant in spam prevention by reporting it. I hadn’t done so before and I was pleasantly surprised that it’s a rapid three click process at minimum and requires no brain cells. It’s the bottom option on the dot menu next to replies and messages.

Report it to the other instances in the conversation.
Heck, maybe a report option to other instances that follow your instance (if you take an action on the account, not auto cascading) - and only as a summary, not as individual notifications to admins
For example:
Server A has users who follow B
There's users on server C who follow users on server A
Spam is sent from B
Sever A moderates it and decides it's bad enough to "notify downstream inboxes"
Server C receives a daily notice containing the forwarded mod report from A and can decide to preemptively limit the particular users on server B

Feels like the amount of #spam accounts has lowered? haven't seen as many, if any, spam accounts for a good 6-7 hours now

The still on-going #spam wave shows that we desperately need real #groups on Mastodon, i.e. groups with admins that can add and remove users from the group. guppe-groups are easy prey for the spammers and make using Mastodon a real pain these days.

I'm still wondering what would be the best approach towards unique #eMail addresses with my domain.
For a long time, I've been using the " " approach with #GMail but that sucks because:
• A fair number of sites reject e-mail addresses containing a " ", and at this point it's no longer a matter of copy-pasting poor snippets, but people explicitly blocking cheap unique addresses.
• It's quite obvious, and so people can easily take the "base" address out of it.
I'm considering three alternatives:
1. The catch-all, or opt-out approach — just grab mail from all possible addresses. Easy to set up, and lets me dynamically get unique addresses with no effort. On the minus side, it's going to get lots of #spam, and I'll end up having to block a lot of commonly used usernames.
2. Prefixed catch-all — grab mail from all possible addresses starting with a specific prefix. Somewhat similar to the " " approach, except without special characters and less obvious. Would combine being able to quickly make new addresses up, while filtering out most of the generic spam. On the minus side, I don't think most of the mail providers would actually support something like that.
3. Explicit addresses, or opt-in approach — create aliases explicitly whenever I need one. Lots of work, but probably the cleanest solution. I'd probably also have to have a handful of "free" aliases on me, in case I needed to quickly give someone a unique e-mail address.

It seems like the long-term solution to the #spam issue is some kind of network-based reputation measure (this is just the confidence of the outsider talking).
They're hard to game, and the fediverse's network metrics should be very informative.
The challenge is doing this on the private parts of the network in a verifiable way, but I'm sure there's some clever solution …

My first thought? They're spamming random #Gentoo aliases, so I've gotten multiple copies.
Nope. The same person actually sent 3 identical e-mails. The second one 2 hours after the first one, and the third one 1 minute later. Really professional.

Yikes....I Issued a Fediblock recommendation for obvious spam activity from a single user instance that follows 48k accounts after joining 3 days ago.
Only a very small number of instances have actually blocked the account so you might wanna do it yourself as a user-level block.

Ich habe ja in den 90ern an einem Übersetzungsprojekt gearbeitet (#VerbMobil). Das Problem an der so genannten tiefen Verarbeitung (symbolische #KI) war damals, dass wir nicht sofortig genug waren.

1. Many of the affected instances have an account created in Chinese with the username yqqwe, and they follow the account with the username mastodon_admin_yggwe at mastodon.tinynews.org. #Discord bot. #MastoAdmin
