And yes we had full-on IBM compatible PCs in this form factor even in the 1980s, e.g. Schneider Euro PC.

So this only happens with real chromium dioxide. It’s a very noticeable smell.
A lot of “chrome” tapes were actually cobalt ferrite (Japanese manufacturers switched to that all the way back in the 1970s) and this is an easy way you can instantly tell what your type II tape is made of.
