Roy DeCarava
Dancers, New York 1956, Photogravure
Capturing moments from life in New York City's Black neighbourhoods, DeCarava shows ordinary people in dance halls, on the street and in the home, bringing subtle details from a black tonality.
The images were etched onto metal plates using light-sensitive chemicals and acid. The plates were then coated with ink and hand-printed onto paper.
