Frida Khalo was such a legend. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said, because she is so iconic. But for me, her self determination and control of her own image in the face of her illness and disability is the lesson we could all take from her. #Tate #art

Frida Kahlo - Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940

In this self-portrait, Kahlo portrays herself wearing her hair in an elaborate braid, adorned with butterfly brooches. On either side are a monkey and a cat. She wears a necklace made of thorns, which pierce her throat. From her necklace hangs a dead hummingbird. Above her head some gossamer blooms look like dragonflies.

In this miniature painting, a young girl wears a skull mask while holding a yellow marigold flower. Both objects are associated with the Day of the Dead, a day in Mexican culture where the dead are celebrated instead of mourned. This was Kahlo's first self-portrait, painted soon after she was hit by a bus, sustaining serious injuries. She wears a loose bathrobe, with an embroidered collar and plunging neckline. The intimate portrait was intended as a gift for her then boyfriend, and she presents herself as a modern woman who is who is free from social constraints.
