My brother described headless guitars as invoking a kind of body horror among guitarists, similar to the reflexive feelings that surround the subject of amputation, and I can't help thinking he's right.

When we start outsourcing thinking to AI and allow to lose accountability, bad things happen.
On July 14, 2025, Angela Lipps was babysitting in her Tennessee home when police arrested her for fraud. She was held in a local county jail until October, then moved to a Fargo jail until December 24, when a judge dismissed the charges. She was released into a frigid North Dakota winter with only the summer clothing she had been wearing when arrested in Tennessee.
It turned out she had …

AI Agnotology, Cognitive Surrender, and Policing Accountability | Stanford Law Review Nice to see the new playground in #SunsetDunes!
Law enforcement agencies have increasingly employed artificial intelligence (AI) in their investigatory methods and technology. This usage, however, raises critical concerns regarding the accuracy and fairness of such practices. Additionally, this issue highlights the urgent need to identify accountability mechanisms and guardrails to protect against misuse and bias. In this Essay, Professor Jeffrey L.

So many political groups in SF were like, “Let’s not take a position on whether to destroy Sunset Dunes. It’s too divisive. Both sides make some good points”. I think there’s a disconnect. They wouldn’t say that if they’d been here. They’re thinking it’s still empty asphalt.
During my quiet evening contemplation, I begin thinking about the bogus CA and PHP vulnerabilities crises this week.
Sure is a great week to be between jobs!
AI may eventually kill us all, but first it will make us miserable.
You have probably heard of the security weakness in the PHP programming language. If not, it is urgent that you become informed on this issue. It affects a massive number of websites and internal applications. Hackers can bypass security credentials and get full access to servers. Patches are available and should be applied as soon as possible.
Because we have entered a heavy activity period before the December holidays, many companies are in lock-down mode. No one wants to risk upgrades during the most busy season of the year. But this is an exception. A five-alarm fire, if you will. The patches are easier than the Year-2000 event, but much more critical to get done now.
Best wishes to my IT colleagues, and my sympathies.
Also thinking about what to do in the medium- to long term. Continue with Proxmox? Switch to a bare-metal OS install, since I was mostly using a single VM Docker for everything anyway, and get a HomeAssistant Green for my HA to keep it on separate hardware from the home server? Get two or three cheaper individual machines, connect them into a k8s cluster, host applications on that? Everything has its advantages and drawbacks. #selfhosting
At 27 pages into Gil Duršn’s new book “The Nerd Reich” I came full stop at this sentence:
“As many political schools of thought do, these technolibertarians make a philosophy out of a personality defect.”
Simply and elegantly stated. The various techno-optimistic philosophies running around Silicon Valley and the venture capital community are toxic and inhumane. We are desperately in need of a new tech manifesto that puts human wellbeing, acceptance, compassion and love as first principals. Why do we write code if not for this? The current direction of technology leadership has taken a wrong turn onto a dark and destructive path. This needs to change.
This is a great book so far. Highly recommend it.

The new mastodon UI is so bad I'm thinking about building a client myself. I am on a desktop, let me resize things or at least try to use the size of the screen, this is not a mobile; and let me get back the toolbar with easy access buttons to common features, not going through "click here, then click here, then click here".

Rather tired of socialists thinking they can build power by being right at people.
