Bad turnover from Ecuador. I thought Tillman was off on Tessmann’s pass, but he looked level on the replay. It was certainly close! Nice find of Balogun, who deserved a goal for his dynamism tonight. 1-1.

Against the run of play, Richards gets turned and can’t recover. Surprising moment for the normally rock-solid defender. If not on a yellow already, he might have been able to do more.
Initially I thought Freese was too reserved in the goalmouth, but I think having seen it again, it was a perfectly placed shot.

Finished my time-shifted watch of the #USMNT vs Japan from last night. Some thoughts:
I liked the formation change to try a 3-4-3 / 3-5-1 in and ou of possession. The idea of wingbacks is compelling for the talent available. Arfsten & Freeman did well, particularly Arfsten. He should make the World Cup roster, backing up Jedi. Having Ream & Richards paired is winning. Blackmon was good …

#USMNT are a defensive mess. Blackmon is lost and the normally reliable old veteran Ream got scorched on a basic return pass. The outside backs have been mostly fine. It’s just centrally that’s the issue.

Not sure that anything was learned today. Any optimism left from the last World Cup has long since evaporated. I’m not too worried about losing friendlies, but the continued personnel questions and lack of cohesion is disappointing.
