Alabama woman prosecuted after stillbirth receives new trial
A judge vacated the conviction of an Alabama woman sentenced to 18 years in prison after a stillbirth. Brooke Shoemaker was convicted of criminal endangerment of a child resulting in death after admitting to using methamphetamine during her pregnancy. Her attorneys said there was no evidence the drug use caused the pregnancy loss. They submitted an expert’s opinion that the pregnancy loss was caused by genetic abnormality and severe infection.
