New international PhD student (starting tomorrow!) stopped by to sign their contract. I gave some intro into matters of bureaucracy (I always warn international people that we do love our forms here in Germany!). Stressed the importance of taking the official vacation days. Answer, without hesitation "oh yes, I'll be definitely taking those!" #academicChatter #theKidsAreAlright

I wrote a contribution to a Festschrift for the retirement of the director of our school. To be published with deGruyter. Yes, I know, I know. But we also publish our textbook with them, so, OK. And it’s OA, at least
Last week the Contributor Terms Agreement came. WTAF! I deleted several phrases and whole paragraphs. Expecting either no reaction or forcing me to withdraw the article

1.5 weeks into a 3 week holiday* and I can feel now just how much I needed it.
And how little I want to go back to work in August.
Let's hope the second half of the holiday fixes that.

What a day! Spent 3 hours with a MA student to finish our pilot experiment for her research project (it’s launched!), meeting 1 with former current PhD students on paper edits, meeting 2a b with another current PhD student on paper edits slides for a talk (different topic), meeting 3 with a future PhD student and their second supervisor on “what it means to do a PhD”, then 7 meetings with students on their term paper topics. 😅 All made possible by the fact that virtually all of German academia is on vacation, so I received a single digit number of actionable emails today #academicChatter

How do people get asked to write "perspectives" for a paper that is just getting out? Is it usually reviewers of said paper? Is it the editor who asks them about it? Can you invite a colleague to write something on your own paper?

From the ethics policy of a journal:
It is not permitted to share manuscripts under review with AI tools in any form, [...] as this compromises the confidentiality and copyright of material provided by the author during the peer review process.
I think the policy is valid but the reason 'compromises confidentiality' is moot because the papers are on the arXiv with names and all that and thus already part of training data and available to agents. Also local models.

(rhetorical question, I've been teaching for >20 years, no need for non-mutuals to help 😘 )

Sometimes in science people discourage you from talking about wild ideas because what if someone "steals" it.
But that misunderstands several points: you are rarely the first or only person to have an idea, we are all swimming in the same water, reading the same literature, attending the same conferences. It would be odd if only one person has a given idea.
Maybe someone already tried it and found it didn't work. Discussing ideas might help to stop you wasting your time and resources in that case.
And there are more than enough scientific questions to go round!
Ideas are the easy part. Doing the work is the difficult bit.
And so what if someone publishes similar ideas to you beforehand? It's science, it's supposed to be replicable (odd incentives like publish or perish culture notwithstanding) and there is always a new angle to explore.
Science is a group pursuit anyway. It's rare you do everything by yourself, discussion with other scientists is as essential as oxygen. And sometimes the more discussion you have the wilder and cooler the ideas get

But because you might inspire other strangers with specific knowledge to build stuff inspired by your idea without even telling you. Ideas want to travel to find new friends. Set them free. They might come back to you or not. Just share. That's what the Real Internet is for ;)
