Currently making some tutorials for our next hackathon - should I upload them to codeberg (and make the students use that)? Or github (where they almost certainly already have accounts)?

Wow, look at the value added by a Journal formatting this article, that probably cost a couple of thousand € taxpayers money. #rant #academicchatter #sorry_not_sorry
If I find the paper super interesting, it's probably too complex to present to my intro class, huh? #academicChatter
(rhetorical question, I've been teaching for >20 years, no need for non-mutuals to help 😘 )
I'm acting chair again this week. I'm thinking of changing my signature to: "I'm not a chair, but I play one on email."

How do people get asked to write "perspectives" for a paper that is just getting out? Is it usually reviewers of said paper? Is it the editor who asks them about it? Can you invite a colleague to write something on your own paper?

“I don’t understand the purpose of this course in the curriculum. What are we supposed to have learned or retained by the end?”
Yeah, good question. It’s not like I spent practically the entire first session explaining the course objectives.

A foreign funder just informed me that “the applicant has decided to withdraw the proposal from the competition. As a result, the review will unfortunately no longer be required. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”
I’m happy to assure you that this doesn't cause me any inconvenience.

New international PhD student (starting tomorrow!) stopped by to sign their contract. I gave some intro into matters of bureaucracy (I always warn international people that we do love our forms here in Germany!). Stressed the importance of taking the official vacation days. Answer, without hesitation "oh yes, I'll be definitely taking those!" #academicChatter #theKidsAreAlright
It's amazing how bad I am at estimating how long simple tasks* will take.
I had a nearly finished manuscript. I just needed to tidy a few things in it and then upload for review
Two hours tops I told my family.
5.5 hours later...

Yeah, sure SpringerNature.
BTW, I'm 'showcasing' my publications on my homepage. ALL of them, including those with serious publishers.

The one single thing, in the last 15 years, that helped the most in organzing myself and structuring my scientific work was learning and using markdown.
No fancy tool or software solution, just some additional characters in a text file changed so much for me.
I was able to grasp it in a minute, saw the benefit after some weeks. Try it and give it time.
#academicchatter
omg how hard can it be to write 1000 characters?! #academicChatter
It's taken me most of the day, but I am finally down to fewer than 250 emails in my inbox. Loads of different tasks dealt with too - I guess I should go to bed now, but I also really need to finish this paper now...

I wrote a contribution to a Festschrift for the retirement of the director of our school. To be published with deGruyter. Yes, I know, I know. But we also publish our textbook with them, so, OK. And it’s OA, at least
Last week the Contributor Terms Agreement came. WTAF! I deleted several phrases and whole paragraphs. Expecting either no reaction or forcing me to withdraw the article

Worked late on a paper today: I have a target to submit 3 before June, which I have been working on in parallel. I sometimes wonder if it would be more efficient to do them one at a time. But much of my job is project work, usually several in parallel, so it's not always possible...
What do you do?

My very first sabbatical (a full year! 🤩) is starting to look real, so I'd better start making some plans. Any tips from fellow academics? Do's and Don't's? #academicChatter
“No paper is useless, it can still serve as bad example.” But it still cost me over 2 h, without counting the time discussing it with my PhD student—which was actually time well spent, as he learned something about reviewing.

Interesting piece on the fragmenting of digital identities in the sciences. I'm sure mine is scattered all over the place.
The key seems to be to keep your ORCID up to date. - and as a model, there are many similarities between ORCID and the fediverse,
"keep your ORCID profile up to date... it is controlled by the researcher, portable across institutions and designed to connect to publishers, funders and organizational systems... makes your ORCID page a stable reference point.."

Another project proposal reviewed, another four hours of community service for a foreign funding agency, and, unfortunately, another bad proposal.
It’s frustrating having to recommend projects to be rejected, but hopefully the funder can use the money to support better projects.

Wenn die Studis nicht-verstandene #KI-Lösungen abgeben, dann gibt's null Punkte und eine Ansprache, aber wenn die Referees in ihrem Gutachten schreiben "... strengthens the mathematical reliability..." und "is both ... and ..." and jedes Substantiv hat genau zwei Adjektive in dieser "valuable and timely contribution".

Someone in another country apparently gave their students the task to reproduce one of our studies but gave them no guidance on how to do it 😬 I'm really sorry, not-my-students but I can't give you individual tutoring on experimental methods, data analysis, Python and statistics this week. Sorry your prof sucks 🙃 #academicChatter
I've finally finished "Katabasis" and find it again eerily accurate when it comes to relationships in academia. Also, of course I'm biased because the main character is a linguist 🤩 I'm getting my dad, the philosopher, to read it to let me know what he thinks of the philosophy parts 😅 #darkAcademia #academicChatter

A Wiley Journal in Analysis (!!) sent me a referee request for a paper whose title is so absurd that I guess it's slop. It asks me to write the review within 14 days. I'm not working in the area and don't understand the abstract at all.
So I think the whole editorial decision process is also slop?
The review invitation does contain a reminder that I'm not allowed to upload the manuscript to any LLM!
Now what? Decline?Just archive the e-mail without clicking on any links?
