It's amazing how bad I am at estimating how long simple tasks* will take.
I had a nearly finished manuscript. I just needed to tidy a few things in it and then upload for review
Two hours tops I told my family.

The one single thing, in the last 15 years, that helped the most in organzing myself and structuring my scientific work was learning and using markdown.
No fancy tool or software solution, just some additional characters in a text file changed so much for me.
I was able to grasp it in a minute, saw the benefit after some weeks. Try it and give it time.

What's that called, when you feel less and less motivated to dive into your bigger and bigger email inbox (knowing what terrors lie within)? #academicChatter
Pro tip: don't give the office next to the elevators to the faculty member who no one has seen on campus for the better part of a decade. And, if the movers just dumped his stuff in the middle of the office, say in 2018, it's not too late to have someone put it away or at least hang a curtain over the window from the hall.

Anyone know of good articles on solipsism in games, especially with regards to game engine design and level design? Feels so obvious someone must have written on this before but Google scholar is not coming up with a lot.

It's taken me most of the day, but I am finally down to fewer than 250 emails in my inbox. Loads of different tasks dealt with too - I guess I should go to bed now, but I also really need to finish this paper now...

Was dann??

Another project proposal reviewed, another four hours of community service for a foreign funding agency, and, unfortunately, another bad proposal.
It’s frustrating having to recommend projects to be rejected, but hopefully the funder can use the money to support better projects.

Worked late on a paper today: I have a target to submit 3 before June, which I have been working on in parallel. I sometimes wonder if it would be more efficient to do them one at a time. But much of my job is project work, usually several in parallel, so it's not always possible...
What do you do?

If you’re about to submit a paper to an established (!) conference, please not only read the call for papers—yes, READ it—but have a look at previous proceedings. Please!
“But I spent so much time writing this” doesn’t make a paper fit the scope

Interesting piece on the fragmenting of digital identities in the sciences. I'm sure mine is scattered all over the place.
The key seems to be to keep your ORCID up to date. - and as a model, there are many similarities between ORCID and the fediverse,
"keep your ORCID profile up to date... it is controlled by the researcher, portable across institutions and designed to connect to publishers, funders and organizational systems... makes your ORCID page a stable reference point.."

Just proofread a paper which contains a sentence to be hopefully cited over and over. You get it here first:

The paper will appear in late summer, I hope

It’s literally part of my job to review proposals, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t have better things to do.
Especially when someone writes in the very last paragraph, “btw, I don’t actually want a professorship, because that would limit my freedom to do what I want.”
Well then, do what you want, but stop wasting my and other reviewers’ time!

I've finally finished "Katabasis" and find it again eerily accurate when it comes to relationships in academia. Also, of course I'm biased because the main character is a linguist 🤩 I'm getting my dad, the philosopher, to read it to let me know what he thinks of the philosophy parts 😅 #darkAcademia #academicChatter

A Wiley Journal in Analysis (!!) sent me a referee request for a paper whose title is so absurd that I guess it's slop. It asks me to write the review within 14 days. I'm not working in the area and don't understand the abstract at all.
So I think the whole editorial decision process is also slop?
The review invitation does contain a reminder that I'm not allowed to upload the manuscript to any LLM!
Now what? Decline?Just archive the e-mail without clicking on any links?
