Just finished and submitted my “preliminary statement” for the foreign funding agency. #Orgmode tells me that I’ve worked for 3:52 on this task, which means that my estimate (half a day) was pretty accurate…

#academicchatter
Haha guess who has two thumbs and somehow agreed to give TWO extra lectures in the last week before the break 🤪 #academicChatter

I get this mail about once a week now. Coming from some private e-mail address at hotmail, firemail, gmail, ... Subject: "Unsolicited application as Materials Scientist." or similar with different field (never maths) The senders are also different each time and the "values in the form" too, but the layout and text are always the same.
What is it? Too little variation for LLMs. It must be some software or service that markets sending this spam to people looking for jobs?

Just one more course, a Zoom call, a meeting with a prospective PhD student, and a thesis defense—and I'm already done for this week.

Managed to finish a bunch of annoying items on my to do list, including some long-ignored emails, but unfortunately tomorrow's 8am lecture was not among them yet /o\ #academicChatter

Here we are, the 10 minutes I wanted to invest 5 minutes ago into a rough first draft of the research school program end right now by stopping the timer after — checks #toggl — 1:41:54. D'oh!

RE: #AcademicChatter
Started the semester with a delay of two weeks, but I think the first two courses today (“Computing in Context” and “Histoire de l’informatique”) went pretty well.
I’ve totally redesigned them and I’ll make use of index cards for in-class writing in both courses. Let’s see how this works out.

Just bundled up my interactive lab notebook system for an open-source release; it's just a panflute filter but has some cool functionality if you want to make little interactive tutorials that live as standalone static pages without any server app necessary beyond a basic host. You can check out an example here:

Second PhD student has successfully defended this week! 😁 I guess my lab is in for a big renewal in the next year...

Two hours into the review that I was unable to do this morning due to admin urgencies, I'm happy to report that I’ve already filled out 2 of 5 sections of the review form (I don’t mean this sarcastically, this is a huge project that’s part of an even huger project, so this kind of review—which will also involve a panel meeting at the funder’s headquarters—is absolutely justified).
I guess I’m entitled to a dinner break…

Omg procrastination has paid off *again*: A presentation I haven't prepared for a workshop today was first significantly shortened (notification: yesterday), and this morning, the whole event has been canceled. I'll never change with this kind of positive reinforcement 😅 #academicChatter

Reviewing a project proposal for a foreign funder. It’s a revised version of a proposal that I recommended for funding. So, the changes seek to address the issues identified by Reviewer 2. And now I hate it :-(

Yesterday, we talked with controlling about the budget of our unit for 2026. Acquisition of third party funding for this and that, balance, etc.
Each professorship has to get CHF 80'000 per year, it's part of the performance evaluation—of course we need way more to fund all members of the group
