I didn't find out I'm part Basque until I was in my 50s (thanks, #adoption 🖕)--it's a fascinating culture w/ a fascinating history & an even more fascinating language (a genuine linguistic isolate).
It's kind of amazing that the 2nd most “mispronounced” name in the world is a #Basque

“You have really, really, really high demand for babies & children. You have really low supply & I’m using this market language because I think it’s important to understand the ways that [adoption] is a market-shaped system.”
I'm so gd glad feminism is finally starting to look at #adoption critically. This is WAY overdue, but I'll take it!

He died in 1997 w/o ever having known I existed. I didn’t even know who he was until 2014. I wish we could have known each other. #adoption #HappyFathersDay

A surprisingly honest must-read on Xtianity's twisted narrative re: #adoption , written by a Xtian adoptive parent. #FamilyPreservation

A quote from the linked article that reads, "And instead of elevating adoption as the only or even best way to care for vulnerable children, churches should also get serious about family preservation efforts. We can work to counteract systemic inequalities that compel birth families to surrender their children and support single parents. When a pregnant woman is anxious about how she will provide for a desired child, our first response shouldn’t be to offer to adopt but to band together as a ch…

I share this powerful piece pretty regularly bc I think it's one of the most brutally honest articles I've ever read on the realities of surrendering a baby to adoption. If you're pregnant & considering #adoption (or know someone who is) you must read it. As an adoptee I feel it's VITAL. #pregnant

My adoptive mother had a big green bottle of paregoric--when I was a child during the '60s, she dosed me regularly. I didn't mind, it knocked me out. Dreamless sleep. 5 decades later, I can still remember the taste. #adoption #AdopteeVoices

Screenshot of short article titled A Spoonful of Opium Keeps the Tears Away that reads: In an era before evidence-based medicine, parents often relied on dubious remedies to treat common childhood ailments. Substances such as Stickney & Poor's Pure Paregoric syrup & Godfrey's Cordial were commonly given to babies in the 19th century to relieve gas, soothe teething pain, & treat unexplained fussiness. The secret ingredients? Alcohol & opium. Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup was also a popular treat…

What was your very 1st 45/LP/cassette/CD?
When I was 5 or 6, I asked Santa for a record player. He brought me one from Sears (it had a lid & carrying handle like a little suitcase) & a single record: a 45 of Diana Ross/The Supremes’ Love Child. I laugh every time I think about it. My adoptive mother apparently felt that would be an awesome gift for her illegitimate adopted daughter. 😶😑🫤🤣 #Adoption

A screenshot, black text on a white background, containing lyrics to the song "Love Child" by Diana Ross & The Supremes:
Oooo
Aaah
You think that I don't feel love
But what I feel for you is real love In other's eyes I see reflected
A hurt, scorned, rejected
Love child, never meant to be Love child, born in poverty Love child, never meant to be Love child, take a look at me
Started my life
In an old, cold run down tenement slum My father left, he never even married mom I shared the guilt my mam…
