Today I have mostly been picking literally thousands of items out of a flot, of which this chaff is but the merest fraction. Couple of decent glume bases in there and lots of fragments of the bits and pieces that go to make up the doings that hold a grain on the plant. #archaeology #EnvironmentalArchaeology

Extreme more than life size shot of bits of chaff in a little boat. It looks like tiny fragments of charcoal but if you look closely, before you go cross-eyed you'll see repeating shapes.

Duck decoys found in 1924 inside Lovelock Cave (Nevada), sealed up approximately 2400 years ago by an earthquake. The one on the right is apparently a canvasback (Aythya valisineria).
