Living nerd-life on the edge.
For the non-initiated it's hard to grasp, but in my throwback mood I have enabled the global ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" USE flag again. To install the latest KDE obviously. In the 5.28 days I used that setup of Gentoo for about 4 months before I broke it.
And it fills me with great joy to see that screen roll by again. Let's see how this ends 😎

My two cents on the new Hyprland:
Hypr, hypr, bring out the mango 🥭 !

You have that gnarly application that only comes in rpm, deb and AppImage. Then you suddenly remember Distrobox. And AlpineLinux is made for these setups. Tests finished, I'll finally be able to run KDE with all my required apps on Alpine! #alpinelinux #archlabs

The worst thing about moving is the end of it. Our stuff will be arriving Monday; we moved into the Cave today. So, how about that relentless distrohopping of the last 2 weeks? That's gotta stop now 😩 CachyOS, Zena, Zirconium, Origami, Arch proper, Garuda: it's been a pleasure! I'll manage to squeeze one final one in and then it's back to the proper init systems 😝

Zena Linux, that bootc container image with Mangowc and Niri, is humming along nicely. Finally spending some time to clean up configs for both wm's. And Fastfetch to do also 😜

Screenshot of Zena, a bootc-based, immutable Linux desktop. It ships with the Cachy kernel, Niri, MangoWC, and Dank Material Shell.

It's difficult to grasp, perhaps. But that you build your own dwm, and just schlepp it around with you, remains unbeatable.

Scrot of terminal windows on dwm - Gentoo, showing two instances of the Fresh editor doing stuff and of the general compile window (emerging yazi)

Remember I did that bootc KDE container, based on the Bluefin template? That method is really handing the power to the user. I've now tried Origami (Cosmic), today a brief stint with Zirconium (Niri and Dank) and I'm now heading into Zena. That last one looks to be very special, and is also a bootc container. More later.

As said before musl-based AlpineLinux really rocks. Of course running all required stuff, like a full KDE session, a firewall and podman (for distrobox), flatpak for all 'bigger' applications and still clocking in at 903Mb. For me that shows how lean everything has been put together. Cool.

Scrot of a terminal window, updating the system on Alpine Linux KDE.

Getting there. Obviously I had a headstart running it on Slackware. And FreeBSD has the best Wayland wm repos, bar none. Also: gnarly things in FreeBSD: bluetooth, how to get that Linux application running, Linuxalators et al, sound and keymappings. But the Handbook is superb, just work my way through it over the days.
#freebsd

Scrot of the overview in MangoWM, in this particular case running on FreeBSD.
