#QueensZoo needs to ditch these awful bike racks and install staple racks. This same amount of space could fit at least a dozen bikes, but the "wheel bender" rack is just space inefficient.

Any bike can be a cargo bike if you are determined enough.

Eight days out from breaking my rib, I took my favourite bike out of the shed this afternoon for a wee ride, to see if by any chance I would be able to ride into Castle Douglas (40Km round trip) tomorrow to pick up my medicine.
I managed about two hundred metres.
The answer is 'no'.

Wisst ihr noch, mein neues Bike?
Rund 1000 km später kann ich sagen: es macht riesig Spass!

My new license plate arrived!
(It’s a reward for pledging to get the real one made. If enough people pledge support they’ll make an actual car license plate that will raise funds for the Bike Fed.)

Rode our new bikes to Pramort, the easternmost accessible point of the Zingst peninsula, where we saw a wild boar, deer, and many birds. About 60 km total.

My bike riding has been poor this year, due to spinal stenosis and then spinal surgery in June... but hopefully the numbers will go up for the rest of the year.
(And who knows? Maybe I'll update some of the Python code that generates these.)

Today's bike ride to work sucked. Wearing a respirator for 30 minutes isn't very comfortable. I had to adjust it a few times and it was much worse breathing in the wildfire smoke so respirator it is.
I can only assume our climate will get worse as time goes on so I figured I might want to get used to this.

My wife & kids are away (the kids at camp, my wife for a conference). As such, I have turned the living room into a proper bike shop. Currently 4 bikes in various states of repair - my wife's road bike, my father-in-law's brand new bike, the 9yo's new bike, and a folding bike. I have a new cassette for my mid-tail bike, too, but I think I'll order new tires first before I replace it. #BikeTooter

I remember back before I biked to work but I wanted to bike to work.
Today would have been one of those days where I was like "I'm too tired, didn't sleep well, my body is sore, there's no *way* I could bike to work today" and yet...
I biked to work today.
In a way, that's the exact kind of day I *should* bike to work.
#BikeTooter
My wife and me both have commitments during the day. So we just did a 2h cycling to our beautiful reservoir and back. It went really well and it felt good to be on the bike.
Especially as it's not so hot any more.
Enjoy your weekend!

Back on the bike on the train, making intercity rail actually useful as a commuter option by using my own bicycle to extend their service area all the way from Home to Office.
I wish Metrolinx didn't have such regressive policies about me "inconveniencing" people who drove a half-ton truck 8km to the train station.

I tried a new bike route to work today. I originally planned this due to some upcoming road closures but I really like it!
Minimal contact with cars and busy roads (except for the last 1.4 miles) and I get to use the new separated bike lane on Lisbon Avenue.

The bike lane is a great place to store these barrels when the speed limit is 35mph and cars tend to go 40 mph.
Last night I said "screw it" and used the sidewalk. I am against biking on the sidewalk (and it's illegal here) but if the provided (crappy) infrastructure isn't even available I'll do it.

We expected rain (but no ⚡⛈️).
So we got our jackets, did our errands with our little bike trailer - and were lucky because it didn't even rain 💪
✅ Saved fuel again
✅ Physical activity
✅ Faster way to detach from work
✅ Saw a couple of cats
Totally recommended!

Okay so I park my bike in the back hall at work and I jokingly scrawled "Bike Parking" in the dust on a large door.
And today there was a second bike!
Keep in mind only 8 people work here. I knew who it belonged to... they didn't bike in but dropped it off in case they need it due to a shared car situation.

This will be my first year commuting to work in the winter on an ebike. I know you can get neoprene covers to wrap around the bike where the battery is, with the idea to keep it warmer for better performance.
Does anyone use those battery covers? Do they actually work?

Am I too late for a #BikeNitePQ ?
My neighbor was complaining about squeaky disc breaks on his bike. I mentioned that I read you can use a high-grit sandpaper to sand the disc a bit and that might fix it... then I offered to help.
Does that work? Is it a good idea to try it?
Today's view from the bike.
1. Furniture partially blocking the bike lane.
2. Furniture moved by me.
3. Bus blocking the bike lane right in front of me.
4. Car that has been parking *on* the bike lane a lot recently parked somewhere else.

Because of a river, railroad tracks, freeway, and cemetery, this might be the most direct path for me to bike to work.
Some of it is separated bike lane, some is multi-use path, some is residential streets, and some is terrible roads with speeding cars.
#bikeTooter #milwaukee
So close! I was able to ride the new (separated) bike lane along Lisbon Avenue in Milwaukee this morning.
Of course *getting to it* is not easy. IT starts at Lisbon & Burleigh which is a really crappy intersection. I rode side streets up to 74th and then crossed Burleigh to get to Lisbon.
Not ideal, but it's doable. Sad because I live a half block from Lisbon but two more blocks before the bike lane starts.
Earlier in the week I decided I should ride my bike to work on Friday... then today I was asked if I could be in by 7:30am on Friday.... can I do both? We'll find out tomorrow!

Been shopping again with our little trailer.
I'm proud to say that we really do the majority of our weekly shoppings by bike now.
and it doesn't feel like we "sacrifice" anything. In contrary: having the activity before and after shopping feels like a GAIN compared to doing it by car. We are driving side roads, see a different neighborhood, in the meantime we know the places of 3-4 cats that we see repeatedly... Car drivers are nice as well.

I was hoping to bike to work today but it looks like rain… but it also looks like a good day to learn how to ride in the rain.

The 360 camera is kind of fun for doing silly things...
#bikeTooter.
It’s been three weeks since spinal surgery so I did a little test ride around the neighborhood. Nothing impressive but, hey… gotta start small, right?
#bikeTooter
This is great news! I’ve been using the new protected bike lane on Lisbon Avenue but it’s difficult to get to the start of it without taking the lane on Burleigh with fast vehicular traffic on your tail.
"W. Burleigh Street would also gain a protected bike lane. The Burleigh Street bike lane would run along the street as it passes Holy Cross Cemetery and Lincoln Memorial Cemetery between N. 60th and N. 72nd streets."

I tried out one of those 360 cameras on my bike ride this morning...

I biked 6 miles this morning. Felt pretty good. My back didn’t seem to mind… I did have a little knee pain at one point. (Which is one of the reasons I switched to an ebike.)
I may wait a bit to try biking to work, especially since it’s supposed to be 90 °F next week. 😭
#bikeTooter
Also from today's bike ride to work. This car stopped, which was good, but then beeped at me to go. If I was going across I would have, but I turn right here, and I try to allow all the cars to go before me, otherwise they pass me going over 45mph. No thanks. I waved them on and they went. (And I caught up to them at the next stop light.)
#BikeTooter
Today was the first day I started my bike commute in the rain and you know what? I got wet. No big deal. I'm not made of sugar. Got to work and dried off. Bonus: I didn't get all sweaty on the ride in.
I may need to get shoe covers though. For now I just swap shoes when I get to work.
#BikeTooter
Every now and then you come across something good in the bike lane…
(This is the third or fourth hammer I’ve found on the street in my lifetime.)

The sports medicine facility I go to for PT sent me a survey. The last question was a big text box to tell them about my experience so I wrote this:
“Overall a great experience. My only complaint is the bike rack in the parking structure that is super-cheap/poor quality and not even bolted down.”
#bikeTooter
Bah! Paywalled article...
"Milwaukee’s emerging network of protected bike lanes & trails secured a major boost recently when the WI DOT awarded the city funding for six projects. The award will cover the cost of building bike lanes on N. Holton and W. Burleigh streets, extending the Powerline Trail at two different points, improving pedestrian safety along N. Teutonia Avenue and upgrading the city’s traffic signal infrastructure to reduce congestion."

I took a (relaxing) bike ride this morning and saw half a dozen baby turtles in the cemetery, then just rambled around town aimlessly, and eventually made it back home after 15 miles.

This is the shortest route to work I've biked yet... It's not ideal as I need to go about a half block on Mayfair Road, then turn left onto Hampton and get into the bike lane on the right side, but good to know I have this route if I need it.

The red lines are my two options to get from one yellow dot to the other on my commute to work. Ideally a protected bike lane along the blue line would be ideal.
Who knows? Maybe it'll happen in the next 20 years.
(I really wish I could cut through the cemetery but Pinelawn doesn't have multiple entrances/exits like Holy Cross does.)
#BikeTooter #mke #milwaukee
Today on the bike ride home I saw a kid (maybe 12 or early teens) blast through a 4 way stop just as a car was stopping to his left, and then the kid rode down the middle of the street swerving around while the car passed on the far left.
Luckily the younger kid that was following him was smart enough to not blow the stop sign and just pulled to the side and yelled at him.
I rode past the kid and say "Be more careful when you ride!" but I'm sure he just though "Shut up, old man!"

I’ve been thinking about getting a new (acoustic) bike and in the process learned all about how gearing works on bikes.
I’m a little ashamed I didn’t already know but just using some gear calculators made it all quite clear and easy to understand.
#bikeTooter
Yesterday's route where I almost got it right going home... The route home is easier as I make a right turn instead of left turn and I can wait until there's a break in traffic before I head onto Mayfair Road.
