This will be my first year commuting to work in the winter on an ebike. I know you can get neoprene covers to wrap around the bike where the battery is, with the idea to keep it warmer for better performance.
Does anyone use those battery covers? Do they actually work?

Back on the bike on the train, making intercity rail actually useful as a commuter option by using my own bicycle to extend their service area all the way from Home to Office.

Today was the first day I started my bike commute in the rain and you know what? I got wet. No big deal. I'm not made of sugar. Got to work and dried off. Bonus: I didn't get all sweaty on the ride in.
I may need to get shoe covers though. For now I just swap shoes when I get to work.

Been shopping again with our little trailer.
I'm proud to say that we really do the majority of our weekly shoppings by bike now.
and it doesn't feel like we "sacrifice" anything. In contrary: having the activity before and after shopping feels like a GAIN compared to doing it by car. We are driving side roads, see a different neighborhood, in the meantime we know the places of 3-4 cats that we see repeatedly... Car drivers are nice as well.

I'm sure that years ago if I had been driving to work and saw someone biking in the rain I'd be like "Oh man, that sucks for them" but honestly I'm surprised how exhilarating it is. Is it actually kind of... fun? Hmmm.

Eight days out from breaking my rib, I took my favourite bike out of the shed this afternoon for a wee ride, to see if by any chance I would be able to ride into Castle Douglas (40Km round trip) tomorrow to pick up my medicine.

cycle.travel is so good! I tried to map a route (by bike) using Apple Maps and it put me on a road I would consider completely unsafe to bike on.
cycle.travel showed me a route where I was like "Duh, that makes total sense!"

The bike lane is a great place to store these barrels when the speed limit is 35mph and cars tend to go 40 mph.
Last night I said "screw it" and used the sidewalk. I am against biking on the sidewalk (and it's illegal here) but if the provided (crappy) infrastructure isn't even available I'll do it.

My wife & kids are away (the kids at camp, my wife for a conference). As such, I have turned the living room into a proper bike shop. Currently 4 bikes in various states of repair - my wife's road bike, my father-in-law's brand new bike, the 9yo's new bike, and a folding bike. I have a new cassette for my mid-tail bike, too, but I think I'll order new tires first before I replace it. #BikeTooter

Also from today's bike ride to work. This car stopped, which was good, but then beeped at me to go. If I was going across I would have, but I turn right here, and I try to allow all the cars to go before me, otherwise they pass me going over 45mph. No thanks. I waved them on and they went. (And I caught up to them at the next stop light.)

Because of a river, railroad tracks, freeway, and cemetery, this might be the most direct path for me to bike to work.
Some of it is separated bike lane, some is multi-use path, some is residential streets, and some is terrible roads with speeding cars.

Cyclist bitten by brown snake caught in her bike chain
The woman, in her 60s, was riding on a northern NSW rail trail when she ran over a two-metre snake that became trapped then bit her.  

I took a (relaxing) bike ride this morning and saw half a dozen baby turtles in the cemetery, then just rambled around town aimlessly, and eventually made it back home after 15 miles.

The red lines are my two options to get from one yellow dot to the other on my commute to work. Ideally a protected bike lane along the blue line would be ideal.
Who knows? Maybe it'll happen in the next 20 years.
(I really wish I could cut through the cemetery but Pinelawn doesn't have multiple entrances/exits like Holy Cross does.)

So close! I was able to ride the new (separated) bike lane along Lisbon Avenue in Milwaukee this morning.
Of course *getting to it* is not easy. IT starts at Lisbon & Burleigh which is a really crappy intersection. I rode side streets up to 74th and then crossed Burleigh to get to Lisbon.
Not ideal, but it's doable. Sad because I live a half block from Lisbon but two more blocks before the bike lane starts.

This is great news! I’ve been using the new protected bike lane on Lisbon Avenue but it’s difficult to get to the start of it without taking the lane on Burleigh with fast vehicular traffic on your tail.
"W. Burleigh Street would also gain a protected bike lane. The Burleigh Street bike lane would run along the street as it passes Holy Cross Cemetery and Lincoln Memorial Cemetery between N. 60th and N. 72nd streets."

Today on the bike ride home I saw a kid (maybe 12 or early teens) blast through a 4 way stop just as a car was stopping to his left, and then the kid rode down the middle of the street swerving around while the car passed on the far left.
Luckily the younger kid that was following him was smart enough to not blow the stop sign and just pulled to the side and yelled at him.
I rode past the kid and say "Be more careful when you ride!" but I'm sure he just though "Shut up, old man!"

I got my first aggressive "honk" while biking to work!
On a two lane road, speed limit 25mph, I was in the right lane going about 24mph and a van got behind me and the driver honked. I could not move to the right due to too many parked cars and not wanting to get doored.
The van driver seemed angry they could not get passed me as a truck was in the left lane.
Eventually they passed me (while speeding) and honked again!
Whatever dude.

I had a rough morning, just all sorts of little things went wrong... and then I headed to work. Just five minutes in, a car driver ignored a red light, went through an intersection cutting off multiple cars and me on my bike.
I'm glad I was going slow. I've made an attempt lately to ride slower in certain conditions. I should probably slow down even more.

We finally cycled a route that we wanted to redo since ages. We just had such a great time. There was one very steep and rough section where I fell a bit, but nothing serious.
It was a little adventure and an absolutely gorgeous start of our vacation.
We also met two elder guys a couple of times and had a nice chat each time. It's just cool to meet some friendly folks.
Unfortunately, I didn't feel like filming. Sorry.

I failed to find padded cycling gloves this weekend. Went to REI and Wheel & Sprocket and nothing fit right. I don’t think I have huge hands but I am not comfortable with tight fitting gloves… I need a little bit of a looser fit.
I even tried a XXL and it didn’t feel right. Like I’m sure they would irritate me after five minutes.
I am not sure what to do next.

Had my first bike crash today. Took a turn a little too sharp to avoid going into the mud. I went into the mud anyway. My left hand got the edge of the pavement and I got a bit of a scrape (no blood) and banged my shin (minor blood).
I really need to get gloves. Both hands are a little sore, hopefully will not last too long.
Bent the shit out of my handlebars. Need to see if I can fix that.

* 1 car parked in the bike lane
* 1 car stopped in the bike lane
* 1 car that sped past me in a school zone (in the oncoming lane) due to not wanting to wait 10 seconds
* 2 cars simultaneously cutting me off
* 1 woman with stroller in the bike lane
* 1 kid on emoto riding on the sidewalk then going the wrong direction in the bike lane (estimated speed: 20mph)
There's probably more but those were the standouts.

It's going to be a few years before a protected bike lane gets added to Burleigh and I hate riding on it first thing in the morning on the way to work but...
I realized today that if these two cemetery gates are open (yellow) then I can ride through the cemetery (red) to get to the bike lane on Lisbon instead of Burleigh (blue), which is much better.
