It becomes ever more important that you stop using Google.
It's been important for a long time, since they removed 'don't be evil' from their tag-line and decided that they had to be a big evil corporation instead.
They're giving up on being a search engine now too by the sounds of it.
You can use startpage or duckduckgo or something if you still want search.
There are lots of different email providers.
There is GrapheneOS and lineageos and others for your phone and tablet operating systems.
There is Peertube and Rumble and others for uploading your videos.
You don't have to remove it all at once, just make a continuing effort to move away from Google, one step at a time.
I'm almost completely degoogled now. Its taken years. It was a good move. Google only gets worse from here.

The old bedroom settling in nicely. Haven't had to re-glue any LED strips for a while.
Today made some progress on a card/dining table. Getting these curves of pine cut cost was stupidly expensive. They're bigger than post pine panels. But at least the wood stain and the varnish is already around from doing all the cupboards.
Stain done. Gonna need, what, at least three layers of varnish? Something of that order.

Went down the pub for a couple of hours to celebrate the Green victories in the borough.
Despite the victory only being about a third of the seats, they seemed pretty jubilant. This council was pretty much 100 percent Labour till now so taking a third is still quite a victory.
Some people surprised they won and now have to to be a councilor when they didn't really expect to have to be a councilor.
Would be good to get more involved with the party in the abstract. In actual practice though I'm always either busy or unwilling to really get dressed and leave the flat.
Should at least try and keep more of an eye on what's going on. See if there's things I can do to help out.
Sounds like that's mostly on Whatsapp groups though, and I ain't installing no Zuckerberg spyware for it for sure.

5% for binface seems absurdly low. There's no other unity candidate against Farage, and half the people in the constituency will vote strongly against the fuckface and so for the binface.

I read Naomi Klein's "Doppelganger", mostly by the pool or the beach while on holiday last week.
It isn't really about her being confused with Naomi Wolf, except on a surface level. Or even really about Wolf moving from left feminism towards right wing conspiracy theory.
Really it's about how political culture has changed as the world has moved more online and suffered the consequences of a pandemic and the often wrongheaded political responses to that.
Conspiracy thinking and a whole culture concentrating on reticence and reactionary thinking instead of evidence and logic.
While reading it I was hanging out with some folks who are much more right wing than I generally do. Here's some things they said:
I don't believe in Sunscreen. Isn't it funny how skin cancer rates have gone up as sunscreen becomes more popular.
I don't believe in COVID.
Carbon Warming models don't even take into account the sun.
I thought Chemtrails were a conspiracy theory, but came to believe it.
Claiming to believe in freedom while also wanting a crack-down on asylum-seekers, thinking they are destroying society.
So it's easy to believe Klein's basic thesis here, the worry that reactionary conspiracy thinking is breaking the entire body politic.
I don't think it's that people have lost all rationality. It's that people are wearing their conspiracy theories as badges, identifying them as a member of a group. Like religious beliefs that bind a group, the more stupid and outrageous they are the more those badges work to identify the ingroup from the outgroup.
The worry is always when they decide the outgroup need punishing for not taking on those conspiracy beliefs and turn to suppression and violence.

Whizz Air have this scam where they have a smaller under-seat-bag test than all the other airlines.
So when you head there with your standard under-seat bag that you use everywhere else, and that fits fine under the seat in reality,, they still make you pay another 70 euros for it to go in overhead just because it won't fit in their super-tiny extra-small testing bay.
The plane was half empty too, so it not like they really super needed to ration the overhead space.
If you're flying Wizz Air, maybe don't, and certainly make sure to note they have this small-bag scam going on.

Final day at the resort. There's a girl here, barely a teen, beautiful swimmer. Running rings around everyone else with her underwater twirls and dives and handstands. Inspiring me to also swim along the bottom as long as I can. Stand on my hands. Turn over in the water and fill my nose with chlorine.
I definitely used to be able to sit on the bottom and deep dive, but now I'm so fat I can't sink. Active effort required to get to the floor of the pool or sink below the surface.

Summer Social with work, which is more than two dozen people now. So much bigger than it used to be.
Enjoyable enough. The boss picks pretty good people, all of whom I'd otherwise not meet at all really being remote. Beats working for a day.
This time a painting session. Drawing a picture. Here's how we draw this particular picture.
Everyone's painting ends up much the same, within a pretty tight variance. All end up with something that's not displeasing, even though hardly anyone paints normally, even the graphics people.
The key here I think is the subject of the image. Something easy to draw is key. Very few curves, mostly straight lines, easy vivid colors. Easily identifiable subject even if it's drawn badly.
If your lines and form are wobbly and weirdly angled then yeah, that's indeed what these trees are like. You just draw a slightly different tree.
Sky, haze, and ground in acrylic. Then chalk up the tree-trunks for some reason, before painting 'em white. Add some trunk-shade and flecks, do grass then flowers.
Easy recipe. Everyone gets a passing grade. Nobody's embarrassed coz they can't draw a nose.
Good first painting session since school. Maybe I'll do another one in another 30 years.

Burnham has nothing to offer. He can't offer PR, he can't offer reversing Brexit, he can't offer even to get Labour to stand down a single seat at the next election.
The most important by election in the century, with the focus of the world's media concentrated on one tiny contest and Caroline thinks we should sit down and stand back and shut up?

We need to stand, fight hard, and present the Green case to that assembled world media and local voters.

Saravanan talks to us about making greener tech.
Everyone else is burning fuel for ai like mad but Saravan wants to make things greener instead.
3% or so of greenhouse emissions are from IT. More than flying.
Cloud providers claim to be carbon neutral but this is changing with ai centers and often software written for them aren't used most of the time.
Green Software Foundation thinks software can be greener and offers courses and a profiler to tell you the carbon footprint of your code.
We can write for carbon efficiency. Electricity and hardware manufacturing included.
Power usage effectiveness can be calculated. How much is wasted on cooling vs compute, say.
Do your compute when solar is in excess instead of during times the power network is burning oil. Or do it in countries with greener grids.
Support older user hardware. Extend the life of end user devices.
Can't help feeling like these efforts are going to be drowned out by everyone else here burning tokens like there's no tomorrow. Which maybe will ensure there is indeed no tomorrow.

My pitch if I ran a TV production company would be something like:
Twelve episodes a year of 3-episode serials: That keeps the number of sets you have to construct down. It gives each story the complexity of a movie and time to breath without the frantic pace. You can have one every season of the year.
You gotta remember to focus on the companion. This isn't really a story about The Doctor, it's about the companions asking the question, Doctor Who?
Episodes should generally start with a companion's face or escapade coz they're the ones we're identifying with as we figure out who the doctor is.
At some point in 2027 you'll cast and announce a new doctor.
This is when you call Billie Piper in to film and release a webisode which is just the regeneration into Billie so far: her going "Oh, hello?" Then shaking her head and saying "oh hell no" and shaking harder until she shakes the face off into the new man or woman you picked who says "Oh, that was close".
That change into the Bad Wolf Doctor was just bad without a capstone xmas episode. So a one minute tik-tokable short to announce the newbie frees you of it.
Then you can start ep1 filming and released nearly a year later on the 65th anniversary with a story that focuses on the companion getting into trouble and meeting The Doctor.
Cast nobody famous. The production is about making stars not finding them I don't want anyone having preconceived notions about the character from seeing the actor in that other show even it it was a really good one and they're great.
Earthbound cross-time time-travel story for serial one to pick up new companion, intervene in an aliens vs aliens space-war in serial two, go screw up history and fix it for the third and aliens endangering companion's family for the fourth.
When they're 3-episode serials you only need four a year. Different writer for each.
Cliff-hangers between episodes in each serial of course, with stories about the nature of time and space and getting along with other cultures and running up and down corridors and scary monsters and of course the question "who is The Doctor and how can they fix this without guns or violence with just a screwdriver and two hearts worth of compassion".
The Doctor is some weird looking older dude, more importantly vivid and strange and scholarly than handsome. He has a big coat and no question marks. Then he can change clothes but with the same coat always have the same look. He needs to be able to do a good arrogant rant at himself while he thinks.
The companion is curious and brave and young enough to be naive and surprised and energetic. Doesn't do what she's told. Wonders off against orders. Maybe sometimes bombs things.
Obviously you keep the blue box and the tune and make a new style screwdriver.
You need to do the behind the scenes shows too. Not sure if they make or cost money but they are brilliant for the geeky fandom. That may be why it came back last time.
Anyway. Sadly I don't own a production company.
I cancelled the TV license in the mean time. Give the money to Big Finish instead. These audio things are expensive. I've bought bundles before. Anyone have favorites? I lose track of which one's I've heard.

It can now, tcloud has cloud functions where its 'serverless' like aws lambda, which I've never used.
The key to serverless is of course that there are in fact servers. And starting them on demand automatically can be slow. Sounds like the EU tcloud has got faster at that lately.
He went through the web interface for using it. Lots of forms. Just like aws really.

A panel. Is the EU over regulated? Can builders build here? Or will all the rules break industry?
The founders on stage start companies based from the start with compliance to regulation as a USP.
But regulators don't seem to understand the tech they regulate.
In survey 80% of companies chose to not enter the market because the laws are onerous. Government can't regulate industry that refuses to operate in their legal zones.
Companies may be spending 30% of their budget on legal compliance!
For my part I think good regulation is helpful but that much of the regulation here is bad, and some of it even malmotivated. Can encourage monopoly. The law is a mess.

A man called Confidence thinks, presumably confidently, that the best interface for a ai agent is not a chat window on a website but... Email!
Chat is synchronous, app specific, dies with a tab close.
But agents tasks can be asynchronous.
Email has identity, a wake event when messages arrive, has a way to reply asynchronously, can attach files, and agents can email each other.
Email is already everywhere.
He has a js library to deal with email to agent messages.
He does a demo including buying a domain and setting up his lib to handle email from it. Interestingly, there's still a web chat to it. Ha.
All of which makes sense but. Email? Really? Surely something more secure and encrypted is better? Something with sender signing so random hackers cant email it? I thought this was surely going to be satire.

Flower framework to deal with ai engineering work transition
Juliette is a game dev who was excited by ai then , oh, its disruptive and can software dev be ending?
So she made a model for thinking about the impact on teams and engineers.
It activities:
What is the work that might be affected? She has a list of things too long to read.
Define how each is done, standard best practice etc. How outputs of each are inputs to others.
Claude builds skills based on that.
Ai capabilities:
Can si do those things? Can it ever?
Probably not for many.
So what is the impact going to be?
If its all done by ai the job is thinking about the product not coding. That plus working out the odds its done it right. More importantly, philosophy! The job is to define what good software is and have the robot implement.
So sounds like she thinks were heading to the job being thinking about systems then wrangling robots.
But only if its reliable and cheap and not regulated away.
Which might not be the case.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol and is a api for agents. Storyblok has made their api into an MCP and Bernhard is here to tell us about that from the context of a psychologist.
Storyblok is a Content management system which can now have agents mess with it for you.
MCP standard connects agents to external systems. An mcp server runs to enable that.
Isn't the agent smart enough to use the api?
Well, they need documentation to figure out how anyway, so MCP rolls that in I guess? Avoid filling the context window with api docs.
Overlay specification from openapi let's you describe the api with a json doc.
The agent can query the server to search for commands, get the spec for the one they want, then call it.
"Skills" are troublesome because they gry loaded to dev machine and never updated. MCP stuff downloaded live on demand.
There exist tools to convert a rest apt to MCP but they apparently fail often because the machine ideally wants something different to a rest api.

Day two, and a much earlier start. Now Kevin Lewis from apify is here to tell us about how http 402, payment required, has been pointless till now but now maybe AI agents will pay when people couldn't.
Giving ai a wallet.
Dollar payments too slow and expensive for agents paying a penny for a page. Days for payment clearance. Kyc means every payer has to be human even.
X402 then instead. Stable coins on blockchain. Programmable , fast settlement. Pay in millionths of a dollar.
Or l402 to pay with bitcoin lightning.
Server sends bill and specifies payment details in 402 reply. Agent making request settles on chain then retries request with payment reciept.
Agents will want to evaluate if its worth the money within budget and etc. Give agents only limited wallet with disposable funds.
There's a mech for paying unpredictable prices. Over pay and refund whatever the excess .
He shows a demo. On how to pay a web scraper to scrape Instagram for you. For a dollar his service will give you 400 scraped profiles.
Paying for questionable services eh?
Not clear why an agent would pay another agent to scrape a website instead of just doing it itself.
No indication of how the agent can be prevented from leaking its private keys to injection attacks.

Thought the main risk to my phone while I was away would be a leak in the waterproof bag/case for it.
But no. The power button keeps falling off. So far I find it and push it back in but one of those times involved taking the couch apart.
You think about gluing it into place but that'd just glue the button stuck.

Opening ceremony involves speaker asking the crowd individually why they are here. Mostly they seem to want to know how to use ai. And not lose their job.

People are sad and lashing out saying RTD and Disney killed it with money and razzmatazz and glitz taking the focus away from the story.
But of course it wasn't cancelled on account of how it was too glitzy.
It was cancelled because the CEO of Disney changed and the new guy doesn't get it so he rug-pulled the production 2/3rds of the way through.
RTD did an emergency edit that tried to promise a xmas special show with Billie Piper, in the hope of cornering the BBC into commissioning more.
He had a few vague ideas about how to bridge to a new show, nothing concrete. Murray misremembers and says there's "multiple scripts" when RTD just said many ideas. So then RTD gets accused of lying and gas-lighting.
Anyway, the BBC and Bad Wolf failed to come to agreement for more shows. The script was never written because the show was never commissioned even though there were multiple different ideas and pitches.
Bad Wolf is just too expensive now since they're used to Disney money.
I guess Bad Wolf studios shuts down now? Maybe then can do a Blakes-7 remake or something.
So what killed the BBC-Wales/RTD/Bad-Wolf doctor who is becoming reliant upon Disney money and Disney CEO changing.
October 2027 is the earliest imaginable date for new shows now.
Xmas 2027 seems more likely.
More likely still is October 2028, by which time it'll have been over 3 years since new TV episodes and the show will be celebrating its 65th birthday.
Thanks for bringing it back RTD. It was fantastic. What a great two decade run.

React is a framework for web ui. There's a 'native' version which is supposed to let you do native apps as well as web apps.
Let's find out some pitfalls of that.
Component reuse is not always great, if it makes your component too complex. Means a bug suddenly can affect many things instead of one.
Performance in test vs prod can be diffent. Test data smaller than real data? Use shitty slow android test devices. Profile running code. Don't randomly change component ids.
Upgrage libs often. Gets more complex to do lots at once. Frequent cleaning means easy cleaning.
Write comments so people know who knows what functions are for and do. Knowledge leaving team as staff leave is bad.

The man from Oracle says they are making databases more AI. Support for vectors in the db and systems to ensure secure access for agents.
He wants to encourage us to use one big (Oracle) db instead of lots of caches and nosql databases. The ai prefers thst, he reckons.
Oracle is like a smart phone. It can do everything. No need for separate devices for music and notes and whatnot. It can even do json now. And vectors.
Data privacy is often done at the app layer, which means a rogue ai could generate SQL to bypas that. So do access control in the db direftly. Which is probably better even without ai honestly. This 'deep security' might work well.
Ai is happier , according to the man from Oracle, if it just has one Oracle db without competitors software at all.
Fancy that.

So it sounds like the tendering process is basically a charter requirement if they break up with the existing production team, thanks to free-market private-ownership tory wankers who can't bare there being a thing they can't bid to own.
Seems it usually takes about six months to a year, and most of the time BBC Studios themselves end up winning the tendering process because they frankly have the skills and equipment and expertise to do these things at scale on a budget that few others can muster.
So there's a far chance we get to next spring and they say okay then, we'll make it ourselves with BBC money and BBC staff after all.
And then, yeah, target date 2028 for the 65th anniversary seems most likely coz it'd be a rush to do it in six months even for the BBC and they'll want something on that day.

If they're not doing the Xmas special then I wonder if anyone will address The Bad Wolf Doctor at all?
Could be that the Billie Piper Doctor never happens. Just completely ignore those final few seconds where her face appears after the regeneration?
Would have been better not to have those few seconds of film in the final show if they'd known it'd be a total reboot next up. Just end with the regeneration energy and no clues for next season's Doctor Who?
Probably wouldn't want to open the new rebooted show with a regeneration scene. Focus on new companion till she meets new Doctor.
I think it needs a special to join the edges really. Hopefully whoever wins the tender will want to do a short Bad Wolf Doctor episode as a prequel to the new seasons.

Mallorca, I am in you. On you maybe it being an island. Hotel has a busy pool. I'm already jealous of the full board people not paying for their drinks.

In summary then, it is indeed quite like being at school. Half hour lessons on things that probably won't ever actually be useful to know in your particular job of varying levels of interest. Mostly pretty low interest honestly. Bumping into colleagues between lessons.
Learned the names of a couple of tools I might try. One google search would have gotten me those but I guess it's a question of thinking to look for them.
If you can judge the mood of an industry from a random selection of talks from a single conference then the industry is very optimistic that they can make AI write a lot of software.
It seems to think this is likely to mean fewer programmers rather than there being more software meaning more workers.
It wasn't as AI heavy as I thought when I first glanced at the program. Managed to mostly be not-ai I think.
Nobody talking about the ethical implications or suggesting joining a union and only one talk about the environment issue at all, it not really noting how much power the industry is about to take.
Liked having a few meals in amserdam with colleagues I never usually see (mostly remote workers, including me). The boss is pretty good at picking people really.
Get a day or so of holiday now too.

Good list, but almost none of these people are going to be pitching to the BBC. They're mostly writers, not production studios. Maybe BBC Studios will recruit them as writers after it wins, or some other studio could even recruit them as part of their pitch, but these people aren't going to be pitching this year because they don't have production studios. 🤷‍♀
All pretty good choices as a show-runner for whoever does win the pitch though. Surprised Fleabag Phoebe isn't on your list.

All the talks in sync at 30 minute intervals. This is too short really. They either have to dive in with jargon I don't get to explain in depth, or barely manage to summarize before the time runs out. No time for Q&A at all which leaves you wondering why not just watch it on youtube?
There's a hall full of stands from corporations of varying evilness giving out useless tat with trademarks on it. People go mad for the loot. Seems to make people quite excited to get a pair of socks or a fidget toy. I leave them to it. Don't like talking to salespeople even if you get free socks with trademarks on them. I don't wear logos in general anyway.
The AI bootsterism is strong, but not omnipresent. Plenty of talks on team management or deployment or progress in non-amazon cloud systems or whatever. Even if they can only be quite surface-detail and lacking depth due to shortness.
It's like being in school really. Flowing from lesson to lesson. Mostly being taught things that will be irrelevent or are boring or are unlikely to ever really come up.

Hey Fedi! I will be in Malloca for a few days very soon. In particular in Pollencia, but I'll have a car and the island isn't big.
I hope to spend most of it writing in an air conditioned hotel room or reading by a pool or on the beach and there's a boat trip planned.
But I should also try and talk to people and explore what the island has to offer I guess?

Thought the staff here at this restaurant were distracted. Took me a few minutes to notice there's a football game going on behind me.

Went to Small World Spring Festival in Hedcorn Kent last weekend.
It was very hot.
It's been hot since. Barely done anything other than sleep on the sofa all week.
Spent most of it lolling in the shade with a battery fan barely able to pay attention to the musicians somehow managing to jump about in the heat.
The campervan wallpaper I put up did as I predicted and fell down quite a lot. Had the gorilla glue ready to try and patch it as it fell. The vinyl wallpaper is probably a mistake. The heat swings are too intense. It swells and the glue fails.
Stands more chance of staying up in future, but is way more creased and shoddy looking.
Still, it's form and function other than that are now as good as it's gonna get in a van that size. The mini-fridge isn't worth it. Coolbox just fine.
Love small world though. Proper hippy festival. Mostly solar powered and punk and ska and folk and jazz and that whole stage just for jamming.
Will likely be back there for the end of summer one. Nice that they start and open the summer.

Shame we can't all go back to running ICQ really. It literally never got better than that. But ICQ would let you do things big corporations didn't like (for example send large copyrighted files directly) and was peer-to-peer and so unsurveillable.
So they did what they always do. Bought it and shut it down.

With the wood stained, and then varnished, and then varnished and then varnished and then varnished and then legs attached and the top varnished and then varnished and then varnished it seems the table is ready.
The two main configurations are the S-shape or the C shape, one maybe better for a meal one for a card game or something. Maybe a DM seat there. Not yet with the keyboard embedded in the arms.
Still need to get some chairs.

Oh, except this one particular sketchy link from a sketchy company started by US intelligence services which is closed-source and offers to scan your hard-drive completely and send all the data up to a company which still maintains a deep relationship with the CIA and the American intelligence community.
DO download that one, just not other ones.
