Just started reading “Killing the Dead — Vampire Epidemics from Mesopotamia to The New World”, by John Blair. Looks fascinating. 300 pages so it’ll take a while. The idea of the undead has been around for probably as long as we’ve had any awareness of our mortality. Mythologies, oral and written, are chock full of the undead. I’ll try to post snippets of this story as I go along. #bookstodon

"In a year not so far from our own, society is run by the shepherds, a global AI system. The shepherds have controlled every aspect of Pok's twenty years of life-they decided what schools Pok went to, what jobs he was eligible for, what foods he ate, and even his medical care. He's content living a carefree life until his father is killed by a mysterious illness. Searching for answers, Pok decides to follow in his father's footsteps and travel to the very last hold-out city and train at the one…

In Agent Running in the Field, Le Carré gave himself a variety of characters through which he could vent his anger at Brexit, Trump, oligarchs, the state of the world & its intelligence services: Ed, Florence, Prue.
The main character, as ever, remains more circumspect but has clear sympathy for the other characters' views #Bookstodon #LeCarré #AmReading

Enjoying the framing of Le Carré's Agent Running in the Field, where it's clear from the beginning that the main character has already confessed his sins to 'the Office'.
I did pause reading once I saw how it might all end in calamity, but I'm glad I picked it back up #Bookstodon #LeCarré #AmReading

Wrote a chapter for the first time in a while. Work on the next book is slow, but I'm glad I took the time. Whatever you do that fulfills you, I hope everyone reading this is finding a little time for joy in between the chaos. #amwriting #bookstodon

Copyright / trademark question:
Why is it that an author can refer to a trademarked product in a book at their whim, but when that book gets adapted into a film or television show the product cannot be included without approval of the trademark owner?
Tagging #bookstodon because that might catch the attention of a writer or editor who knows the answer.

Just finished reading the latest #SlowHorses novel, Clown Town. Man o man this is a nasty one. Lamb is pissed that his joes keep getting killed, and that Taverner is more or less responsible. Dunno if this one will ever be televised. #recommended
