Common liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) growing on the shady side of my house. The little cups are filled with wafer-shaped asexual buds called gemmae that get dispersed by rain droplets. The thallus is currently sending up reproductive structures so stay tuned for gender reveal (species is dioecious). #liverworts #plants #botany #nature #moss

Adventitious roots on a jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) growing in my yard. I've read that people use the flowers to dye fabric and I'm wondering whether the color here is the same pigment. Anthocyanins, I think. #roots #impatiens #jewelweed #botany #dye #dyeing #balsaminaceae

Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) flower in the female phase, with anthers still packed into a ball that looks like an osage orange. Mostly pollinated by beetles and flies attracted to the unpleasant odor. I'm hoping for fruit this year. #pawpaw #fruit #botany #flowers #tree #nature #pollination #annonaceae #gardening

Close-up of a bloom on one of my peonies. The label is long gone but seems to match up to images of 'Hillary', a hybrid of herbaceous and tree varieties. #peony #flowers #plants #paeonia #botany

Backlit corn silk to show off the feathery surface that helps snag falling pollen grains. The stigmatic lobes can grow over an inch per day. #corn #maize #pollen #botany #gardening #allotment #pollination #pollen #stigma

Stilt roots of maize are really creepy when they are reaching out for soil. #maize #zea #roots #corn #botany #garden #gardening #allotment
