My initial thoughts as I read through the Canadian summary:
- While it mentions a political revolution in the U.S., with Trump removing or ignoring controls on his powers, it doesn't talk about how critical their midterms are.
- If the Democrats fail to take control of the House and Senate, then 2027 and beyond will be worse. Trump, senile and aging badly, will be a puppet for the worst elements in the U.S government.
- There's a real possibility that midterms could get canceled outright as Trump seeks absolute power.
- Smaller risks, in terms of impact, are food and health safety.
- The U.S. is removing all restrictions on profit in their food chain. Inspection agencies are being dismantled and legislation eliminated. Yet we continue to import goods from them.
- The anti-vaccine strategy at the very top is leading to surges in COVID, flu, measles and more. How long until that spills over our border.

So this is percolating and the results so far are not surprising.
I'd vote NO, for the following reasons:
- oil demand continues to decline and risk is high we'll end up with an expensive underutilized pipeline. Therefore high risk we'll end up subsidizing any private entity that builds this thing.
- why would we invest public dollars to support infrastructure for a product where 75% of the profit leaves Canada? There has to be a net benefit, beyond steel sales and jobs, for this project to be considered.
- Indigenous land rights must be respected. They will be left with the rusting pipeline decades in the future, and it's impact on the land.
- the B.C. government must also have a final vote as they have to give up land and provide support.
- we don't need additional oil tankers on our west coast.
- and most importantly, with this MOU, Canada pretty much declared we aren't serious about protecting the environment or fighting climate change. We're oil whores. Harsh but....

I don’t regret my vote, based on my options during the election, but I am extremely disappointed in his policies. Likely killed my future Liberal votes.
Sure would love a strong NDP.

Great message from Tod Maffin - @… - about what ordinary Canadians can do in response to U.S. threats to our sovereignty. He's a great cheerleader for Canada and this message deserves to be boosted and shared.

From the IMF
"the Canadian economy remains much less integrated than its global footprint would suggest. Goods, services, and workers face significant barriers when moving across provincial and territorial lines—a fragmentation that affects productivity, competitiveness, and overall resilience"
Most of the benefits would flow to the smaller provinces

Maybe I'm in my own little info bubble but I find it hard to believe that 60% of Canadians would support a new pipeline from Alberta to the west coast. I was disappointed with Carney's negotiation/capitulation to Smith, and I think longterm it's a misstep by the Liberals. Indigenous People will fight it tooth and nail, and we should support them in that effort. B.C. doesn't want a new terminal on their coast. Demand for oil continues to drop and there's a real risk the pipeline is severely underused upon completion. Most of the money made from oil moving through this pipe will leave Canada. Canada's reputation is polluted with this announcement while the majority of countries continue to develop alternative energy solutions. I can understand the support from Alberta as the province doesn't appear to have a strategy for transitioning from an oil dependent economy. But who are the other Canadians that Angus Reid surveyed?

Yesterday @… posted an article from CTV that reported on the political risks faced by Canada in 2026. I hope Canadians read it and share it because IMO it's important.
The article is based on a report by the Eurasia Group, a consultancy that advises companies and countries about potential risks. They tie together known facts to form opinion on potential risks that could require deft navigation in the year ahead. Canada definitely faces more tariffs and trade challenges, we should expect U.S. interference in an Alberta referendum, it's likely we may have to come to the defence of Greenland, and if we resist too strongly we become a target.
The CTVNews article is attached via Snowy's post, and I'll link the original Eurasia Group summaries in the next post. It's not surprising yet incredible that so much global turmoil has resulted from arguably the worst person to be elected by a flawed American democracy.

The Avi Lewis AMA on Reddit this afternoon was interesting. He didn't answer my question, and I'll eventually get over it, but he was swinging for the fences with his ideas. His responses would resonate I think with MastoCanucks as they pretty much call for the government to get more involved in providing real solutions. Including building 1M public homes, tackling U.S. ownership of our media, getting rid of FPTP with electoral reform, guaranteed income programs, publicly owned options for major business categories (banks, grocery, phones, etc). Those big ideas could wake up and excite voters while at the same time facing huge opposition from big businesses and wealthy Canadians who would face a new wealth tax.
I hope he wins the leadership. At the very least he'll push the Liberals to be bolder, and maybe even lead a minority government that could bring some of his ideas to fruition.

So the Canada - China trade deal just announced is interesting, particularly regarding Electric Vehicles. It was primarily about restoring our agricultural trade with China by allowing their EVs to access our market. But it will likely, despite the limited amount that will hit our shores, jumpstart the EV market in Canada. Cars that are feature rich and cost less, like the one reviewed in the YT video linked below, will push current manufacturers in Canada to up their game.
Doug Ford abandoned his Captain Canada persona and selfishly attacked the deal because of potential impact on Ontario's auto industry. Part of his statement demanded that the Federal government cancel their Electric Vehicle mandates because it was too costly for manufacturers to build them. I think Toyota and Honda, long time Canadian partners, may be concerned about the deal, but U.S. manufacturers are abandoning EVs and Canada. Hey Doug, I thought we were Open for Business?

You may not like #PeePee but you gotta respect his ability to promote a divided Canada. Today, the Duke of Divisiveness will ask the house to vote on whether they support the Liberal's MOU with the province of Alberta. He knows that there is environmental grumbling amongst the Liberals in Parliament and he thinks this is an opportunity to weaken Carney's leadership image. A vote could cause friction within the Liberal ranks and at the very least put individuals on record so their vote can be used against them in the future. It should be an interesting day.
Recently Angus Reid released survey results showing 50% of Canadians would support a new pipeline. What about you? There is a straight forward question below - Yes or No - but please add any opinions, comments or caveats to support your choice.
Do you support a new pipeline from Alberta to the coast of British Columbia? Please boost for additional reach.
