Baking egg shells, as one does. For most of my life I added these to holes dug for tomatoes (because Mom), but I've since learned that that has no effect at all because the calcium carbonate doesn't really dissociate in real time unless you dose it with acids. Same reason I've stopped adding them to the compost. I'm a huge fan of candy bars packed with nuts but will gladly also eat the healthier, nut-forward ones that one might find in the checkout-aisle at REI. What I've noticed, sadly, is that the healthier bars almost always have rancid nuts; candy bars almost never do. Is that because candy bars sell so fast, but health bars sit on shelves for years before selling? Or do health-bar makers just buy rancid nuts and hope people don't notice? Or maybe encasing nut fillings in chocolate protects the contents from oxidation??? #food #candy #nuts #rancid #chemistry
