What if dinner was public infrastructure - again?
"food charity Nourish Scotland are pushing for the reintroduction of public diners to Scotland: diners subsidised by the state to provide affordable, nutritious, and filling meals that are accessible to everyone regardless of their financial status.
“There's an element of universality, dignity, and quality that comes with something being a public institution or a part of public infrastructure,” said Anna Chworow"

The front page of the November 18, 1981 issue of the New York Post, featuring the story that partly inspired Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner”—the death of actor William Holden.

“Drunken Fall Killed Holden,” the headline says. “He smashed his head on table, says coroner: Page 3”

A faded photo shows Holden with a drinking glass in his hand. The caption reads: “William Holden, pictured in New York last year, at the opening of an exhibition featuring photographs of the wilds of Kenya he loved so much…

A cartoon cat dressed as a sushi bar waiter stands next to another cat at a table with a menu that says Sushi Bowl (on the wrong side).
Next pane, the waiter is placing a fishbowl on the table with a fish in it. The diner cat is wide-eyed and has chopsticks held miraculously in its left front paw.

Lynn realized that I had not eaten a thing today (the word she used is “hangry”) so we’re grabbing a bite at the old town. We got a window seat!
Downtown Ann Arbor is jumping on a Thursday night (as usual)!

This is a vibrant evening scene of an outdoor dining area, part of a restaurant’s pedestrianized street dining setup. The space features multiple red umbrellas that create a cohesive canopy over the seating area, with modern metal chairs and small round tables arranged throughout.

The setting is a city street, with mature trees providing natural overhead coverage and string lights adding a warm, festive atmosphere. You can see several groups of diners enjoying their meals at various tables, cr…
