New research by the Environment Agency shows the country will need above average rainfall throughout autumn and winter for all areas to be out of drought by April 2027

In the Netherlands, the 2026 summer drought just isn't over yet. Precipitation deficit (evaporation minus rainfall) is going up again in a warm and dry September week, ending the season in the top 5% of driest years on record. At the end of the month, the deficit will be ~3 times higher than in a median year.
