Finally got around to look at the photos I made while in Vienna for #ECSA2024. #BelieveInFilm #AnalogPhotography

«Instead, the absolute “right” interpretation would be the thing itself, whole and observable. But that interpretation has long been lost to time, Brown said: “Right is washed down the stream a couple of hundred years ago. Right was never fossilized to begin with. Right got eaten by a scavenger.”»
This is about fossils, but at #ecsa2024 I had some good chats about how this (imho) applies analogously to any data and data set.

Heading back to London and sad to miss the rest of #ecsa2024, but it was a pleasure to finally chat with @… in person!
MM: So far last analyses only include publications until 2018, so not very recent #ecsa2024 // way to make me feel old, for thinking 2018 was like yesterday! 😂
SD: Need to adapt how we influence. Examples include TikTok, YouTube and a Substack newsletter… #ecsa2024
Great talk by @…, with a sneak peak into new results, to be published soon! 🤫 #ecsa2024
SD: Need to embrace encounters, challenging established notions. But need to work hard at overcoming the initial dismissal when being challenged. #ecsa2024
MM: # of CS papers has grown from 7 in 2010, to 336 in 2022. Was significant growth, in line with EU funding for CS. Currently seems to plateau though. #ecsa2024
Birgit Nordt from project “Pflanze KlimaKultur!” on the motivations of participants, wide array of motivations for engagement (which lasted 2 years)! #ecsa2024
MM: 45% of papers are "science of CS”, followed by "doing CS" with about 33%. Both categories grow substantially during time period, others not so much. #ecsa2024
Now: @… on measuring nightly changes in artificial light emissions with the Nachtlichter app. #ecsa2024
MGA: CS is slowly growing in Africa, types of projects similar to those in Europe. #ecsa2024
Collecting data to understand resource consumption etc. is key, but very time intensive. Starting a CS project to collect this data. Part of the “Colouring Cities" network. #ecsa2024
SD: Further points to meet these challenges: think about building open infrastructures, ensure a diversity of voices, and finding local solutions to address epistemic injustices. #ecsa2024
Next: Tabea Danke, talking about "Colouring Dresden”. Understanding buildings & construction are important, lots of energy & money goes into it. Plus, many people happen to live in them! #ecsa2024
SD: How can we meet all of these changes? And is #citizenscience as a label expansive enough? #ecsa2024
SD: Let's build a framework of continuous adaptation, trying out different approaches with different points of view in an evolutionary approach. But need to get better at selecting the successful approaches. #ecsa2024
MM: People do more research on CS, than actually doing CS. 🙈 Two expansions needed to improve: Which disciplines are "doing CS", and sub-categorize “science of CS”-publications to understand the different aspects of it. #ecsa2024
Now: Mercy Gloria Ashepet on "Can citizen science-generated data induce policy changes? Insights from policy actors in Uganda“ #ecsa2024
SD: science is important for progress, but can also point out things not beneficial to economy (c.f. climate change). political environment now incl. decreased research funding, denial of science, misinformation, changing legal protections,… #ecsa2024
At the “The dynamics and perspectives of change of Citizen Science for Health” workshop, starting off with a brief into to the working group. #ecsa2024
MGA: People also focused on an idea of "science for all", being inclusive. Some people also think about "citizen science as an instrument to collect data”. #ecsa2024
SD: The future will be found at the fringe – The fringe is where we see the most diverse thinking. E.g. thinking of the open science innovations and data governance innovations. CS itself was at the fringes once, some parts of CS still are (environmental justice, open science). #ecsa2024
Friederike Barkmann talking about a citizen science project with pupils on the impact of green roofs for buildings. A pupil's feedback: ”We were allowed to go on the roof of our school", which I think is a really fun way of transgressing 'school rules' as a fun side-effect/motivator. #ecsa2024
MGA: When it comes to trust into citizen science, majority of policy makers had inherent trust into CS-generated data. Have confidence in their own community members. #ecsa2024
Moritz Müller presenting a bibliometric analysis of the CS literature to quantify the evolution of citizen science:
CS as a field is growing, but lack of recent bibliometric analyses, tries to fill that gap. Explore if/how CS publications track the increase of funding etc. Also looking at how types of CS publications have changed.
#ecsa2024
MGA: Did semi-structured interviews with policy makers, only 1 out of 4 had heard of citizen science. People assumed that it was about “science of the community", i.e. science about how a given community does things. #ecsa2024
I have a really hard time to get excited about the question of "how can #citizenscience inform policy?", given how policy mostly seems to happily ignore facts, regardless of who produces the knowledge 🙈 #ecsa2024
SD: focus on governance, collaboration (e.g. look at #ecsa2024
MM: Different CS publication types:
- "doing CS”, e.g. using CS as a method but paper is describing findings from the project
- "science of citizen science", how is CS done?
- “Mix": presents both the research as well as the practice of CS
- “meta level": discuss CS in a larger context/academic fields
- “other”/“unclear”: Does not fit, or is it even related to CS?
Method: Search WoS (😭) for "citizen science", papers between 2010-22, at least one EU-based author: 1600 papers.

Lea Den Broeder and Annemarie Wagemakers on lessons learned from COVID on #citizenscience in community health promotion. Including lessons the “Citizen Science 4 Health” community collected at our conference.
Stresses accessibility of approaches and places, focusing on people’s needs and connecting the community. #ecsa2024
Heading to Vienna for the conference of the European #CitizenScience Association. #ecsa2024
