Maybe the war between Russia and Europe, will not be as kinetic and intense as past wars. But it seems we are slowly gliding into something that could be given that name. Russia also has an interest to make it not an "all-out" conflict because by keeping it at a lower intensity, art. 4 and art. 5 of the NATO treaty stay out of sight. A lot of NATO-countries will oppose calling for a art.5 procedure when "just" a few targets in Europe are hit.

Putin sees the EU, it's internal divisions, the slow and weak decisionmaking, the fear of war, Trump actively undermining the EU, the rise of the AfD and other extreme right parties... I understand he thinks the EU is weak and he can win the war in Ukraine because EU support will falter and break under pressure. This is the reason i think there is a good chance escalation will continue in Europe. War is coming for european countries besides Ukraine.

We can assume that Russia is fully engaged in supporting the AfD where it can, indirectly, via intermediaries. Maybe using their old contacts and intelligence networks in the "east". Also it will probably support muslim extremism and extreme left, also with cut-outs, all to destabilze Germany.
If you read about coldwar history, they have a lot of experience in playing various sides to destabilize countries.
