a little concerned to see news from Spain that the Supreme Court has suspended voting rights of citizens (like me and my children) who obtained citizenship through their spanish born parents and grandparents.
It is extremely unusual for a citizen not to have the right to vote in general. It goes against Spain's constitution.
Of course this question to the Court was put forward by Vox, the far right conservative party.
it will have to be resolved before the elections. It would be unprecedented in Europe in post war, post Franco, times for a class of citizens to be excluded from voting.
Either they restore the right by clarifying the law, or they strip us of our citizenship completely.
I just can't imagine there would be wide domestic political support for disenfranchising millions of people who have clearly declared their intention and desire to be reconnected with Spain.
our family has built a lot of future plans around our spanish and EU citizenship. A change like this would be deeply disappointing.
