If you have an opportunity to visit a freshly-burned forest, look for pyrophilic beetles (e.g., certain species in Sericoda, Melanophila, Monochamus) and flies (Microsania). Some have specialized antennae for detecting smoke, others use infrared-sensing areas on abdomen or thorax to locate hot spots. #fire #smoke #weather #canada #beetles #coleoptera #insects #flies #trees #forests

#ForestryEngland leap into action after the disastrous* wildfire in the New Forest by, er, asking campsite operators to ban portable barbeques. Horse, stable door. Stable door, horse. Oh wait, where did he go?

* Disastrous in terms of rare wildlife habitat and indeed the flora and fauna itself, relative to the past few thousand years, but of course in a few short years the criteria for disaster will be ratcheted up a few notches. No-one was even hurt, for instance, as far as I know, let alone killed. Living in another Forestry England area makes me a bit pessimistic about the future.
