I'm sitting outside with a coffee, amid the garden Mum planted so skilfully, and which I maybe didn't appreciate while she was alive, and the various things we've stuck in pots - walnut, fig, olive etc - and have just ordered a hazel tree and a cherry tree from The Woodland Trust. Mum had several big ceramic planters that are now empty or full of scrub and they're just right for young trees that are just a twig and a leaf 🌿

Walnut tree about three years old.
Olive tree, freshly fed yesterday.
Broad view of an exploded flower bed full of lots of bits and pieces of different heights and types. Copper beech in the background, blue skies.
View of patio and bit of garden unintentionally framed by the parasol. Nasturtium planter to the left, fig in the middle, Sparky centre right. Camellia (?) tree in the background.

PSA: Wood boxes with slits that are marketed as "butterfly houses" are purely decorative. Multiple studies have confirmed that butterflies never use them. But paper wasps (Polistes) do, which is not great for butterfly populations because these wasps hunt caterpillars. Plus they sting, so not great for humans walking by. #butterflies #scam #insects #nature #garden #lepidoptera #wasps

I’ve been neglecting my duties in the garden and it shows. Had to say bye to two zucchini due to vine borers and another has a bad infestation of squash bugs. That said, the garden is producing nicely. Best harvest tonight of blackberries yet this year.

With a heavy heart I ripped out one of my tomatoes yesterday. Plenty of flowers but not a single fruit, plus new growth in last week looked stunted and twisted. Assuming some sort of virus. #tomatoes #garden #allotment

I've been #gardening this morning, mainly seeing to the veg plus feeding the olive tree. The garden is really putting on a show. It's a shame Mum's not here to see it, as she's the one behind it all. The sage flowers are in reality a glowing violet colour, just gorgeous. #bloomscrolling

Very pale pink rose, I know not which variety. Slight scent.
I have no idea what this is. Suggestions welcome. It's a bright purple small flower in lots of jumbled foliage. A tiny wee blue flower is popping up here and there through the riot.

Anyone know the name of these tiny chili peppers? A friend brought them back from Sardinia and is curious. I've managed to germinate a few so perhaps flowers in a month or so will help, but maybe their small size and origin is enough for an ID by an expert. #peppers #chili #capsicum #garden #gardening #sardinia #italy #cooking

Had a productive morning in the garden. Got all the beds weeded. Said bye to some old friends. Harvested the last cabbage. Pulled our garlic crop which was pretty much a failure this year. Started harvesting the onions, which did great this year. Out with the kale too. 🧅

Evening Squash Bug War: Casualty Report
10 adults KIA, 4 egg pods destroyed.

But lo — my thumb of justice, swift and firm,
Hath crushed thy copper eggs and broke thy line.

Watering the tomatoes. The white PVC tube is 24" long, capped at the end, and has 1/8" holes every 4". If I had to remake I'd probably make the holes 1/16" so that the water was released a bit slower. #tomatoes #water #garden #allotment

Apples protected from insects by nylon sleeves and from squirrels by stainless steel bags. Now I need to surround the whole tree with fencing to keep the deer away. I have no idea what type of fruit I have. Per the label at the garden store it has four grafts so it will depend on which branch they develop. Yesterday I found a squash vine borer (Eichlinia cucurbitae) egg on one of my zucchini. I highly recommend examining stems, leaves, and flower stalks several times per week so they can be removed before the larvae emerge. Swarthmore, PA, USA. Sharing my solution to squash vine borers (Eichlinia cucurbitae), the larvae of which burrow into the roots and eventually kill the plant: inject Thuricide Bt into stem wherever you see frass accumulating. This is easier to do if you train your plant vertically so that lower parts are visible. I also regularly police for eggs. #garden #gardening #squash #zucchini #vegetables #allotment #insects #lepidoptera #moths
