I post a lot here and on Maker Forums Discourse, and have kind of not gotten around to blogging for a while. But today I had time to reflect on my first full year of #HamRadio — this new hobby has surprised me in a lot of (good) ways.

Reflections on a year of ham radio
When I was about twelve, I was captivated by the idea of “ham” (amateur) radio and wanted to become a ham radio operator to talk to people around the world. A lot of the learning was easy enough for me, except for two things: I had great trouble memorizing all the frequencies, and the way I was taught Morse code was by memorizing visual flash cards.

i have a question. #meshcore, why? in case of disasters? why not a #ham license, or cb / pmr radios, or even a proper freifunk-style p2p wifi based backbone for high bandwidth backhaul before going the last-mile? all of these seem to me better suited for a disaster than meshcore.

I made a #HamRadio antenna that I really like, and wanted to share the design and process so others can do it too. It's a carefully-tuned linked dipole that is light and has served me well for #POTA activations. It's now in its second iteration and so far I'm very happy with it.
