I recently acquired an old Dell server for my homelab setup. I haven't touched real enterprise hardware in quite a long time. It's been a good [re]learning experience.
Let me just say this, though: putting a second computer inside the server for management (IPMI/iDRAC in this case) is genius, and it's a REALLY nice safety net.

Post fan/GPU upgrade, and some additional fan RPM tuning via IPMI: VM server is running a lot cooler, for the most part. CPU VRM temperatures during a big compile job are less than the *idle* temps previously.
But I'm now seeing NIC temperature and it's concerningly hot. I'm not sure why it wasn't showing up before so I have no idea how toasty it was.
I'm also seeing what appears to be poor / unstable network performance.

Thermals on the VM server seem dramatically improved from the recent upgrades!
The changes made were:
* Swap the existing cheap 2x 120mm case fans with floppy connector and no PWM/monitoring out for Noctuas with a normal 4-wire fan connector
* Add two new 80mm Noctua fans on the back of the chassis, which previously had no fans in that spot but obvious screw holes where they could be added
* Add PCIe slot fan next to the NIC
