ICE Lawyers Are Hiding Their Names in Immigration Court #fascism
I tend to watch Supreme Court rulings, given my old life in the law biz. I'm surprised at the way the ruling split on the just published FELICIANO v. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION case:
Reversed and remanded.
Gorsuch, J., delivered the opinion of the Court, in which Roberts, C. J., and Sotomayor, Kavanaugh, and Barrett, JJ., joined. Thomas, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which Alito, Kagan, and Jackson, JJ., joined.
toilets law etc
That Supreme Court ruling is sort of reminding me of Brexit! Small proportion of people pushing it, don't fully understand the implications of what they're getting, lots of people who _do_ understand the implications dismayed. Blithe refs to infrastructure that doesn't exist yet. & that clip where it dawns on the politician blokie that trans men exist, it's like that clip where that other politician blokie's just found out how many trucks arrive at Dover!

"Want to import toxic chemicals into Britain with scant scrutiny? Labour says: go right ahead"
George Monbiot explains:
"Yes, these proposals might reduce costs for business. But the inevitable result is to transfer them to society. ...
"Many have paid with their lives, health, education or livelihoods for previous “bonfires of red tape”: through the Grenfell Tower disaster, filthy rivers, collapsing classrooms, consumer rip-offs and the 2008 financial crisis. But as long as these costs can be shifted off corporate and current government balance sheets, that is deemed a win for business and win for the Treasury."

Useful analysis from Nour Haidar on the wider implications of proscribing Palestine Action, inc blurring the difference between property-harm and people-harm.

UK police conflating "support for Palestine" with "support for proscribed group Palestine Action".
When they passed that law, I _thought_ things might slide this way at some point!
"In the encounter, which she filmed, one officer told her: “Mentioning freedom of Gaza, Israel, genocide, all of that all come under proscribed groups, which are terror groups that have been dictated by the government.”
"He went on to say that the phrase “Free Gaza” is “supportive of Palestine Action”, adding it was an offence “to express an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organisation, namely Palestine Action is an offence under section 12(1A) of the Terrorism Act”. The officer told her she had committed that offence."
Starmer & co really need to speak out if this _wasn't_ exactly what they wanted to have happen :-/

housing ownership law possibilities
Should we maybe have a law that says any one person or entity can only own a max of 2 houses? Or that you can only own 1 not being lived in by your immediate family?
I can see several reasonable use cases for having 1 extra house, including when an old person dies and the family takes a while to decide what's happening with their previous house. And we could debate those cases, and maybe even decide it's not worth arguing over 2 or 3 extra, because that isn't the biggest problem.
But I think we could possibly mostly agree that having one person or company own 5 or 10 or 50 or 500 houses just to extract profit from them is not good for overall wellbeing.
