Anyone know a reason to not find accounts that use a signup IP that is a known Tor exit node as a signal of being a bot?
I'm looking at IPs by doing: Query: <reversed-ip>.dnsel.torproject.org − resolves to 127.0.0.2 if it's a Tor exit.

What actually is the mastodon upgrade path across minor releases, like v4.3.18 -> v4.5.6? The release notes generally mention only upgrades from the most recent patch release in the same minor (vA.B.n-1 -> vA.B.n). Are huge jumps safe, assuming the new minimum requirements are met? Are backwards-time forward-version (eg v4.3.18 -> v4.4.0) upgrades invalid? Are all intervening database migrations handled automatically at service startup? Any gotchas?

I've blocked mailpro.fun from creating accounts. Seem to be marked as a suspicious site by firefox and only spammers have signed up from that domain.

Auf kleineren Instanzen versuchen sich immer wieder irgendwelche Marketingfuzzis einzunisten, die dann von dort versuchen ihren Müll zu verbreiten. Erst sind sie auf größeren Instanzen unterwegs, werden dort vermutlich gesperrt und probieren es dann weiter. Erlebt ihr das eigentlich auch?

Lot of new bot accounts are putting a single random emoji at the end of their display name in hope of blending in.

In the past few weeks there has been a bot farm hammering small Mastodon instances with requests for what looks like emoji-related assets and the hashtag API.
More specifically, it appears this bot farm has now come for my Mastodon instance, because the number of requests has doubled in the last 24 hours, with a lot of the requests being API requests for a single JSON file.
Even more specifically, looking at data provided by my CDN provider, a lot of the bots appear to be using IP addresses associated with Tencent Singapore.

success! Upgraded #footiMac to Debian 13/Trixie and brought Mastodon along for the ride.
Had a few hiccups...
1) I upgraded elasticsearch and ended up having to clear out its cache files as it didn't want to 'upgrade' them itself.
2) postgresql 15 and 16 are still running in the background and needed new timezones in their configs.
3) Charlock_holmes ruby gem was unhappy (as noted in recent Mastodon release notes) and needed: bundle install --force to actually get it to install again.
4) libvibs is not happy either, so I turned it off in the config file. This seems to be an ongoing issue.
Once those things were found and fixed, it all came back up.
Phew! Wonder what else broke lol

A small group of us (Note: really, really small) are in early discussions on how to encourage our government - individual politicians & federal, provincial, and municipal departments - to move their social media presence to Mastodon. This would involve an awareness campaign targeting politicians, party HQs, and departments/agencies.
We are asking for input from admins to help us create a future state vision for this project, and provide us with advice or ideas on how to bring it to a reality. I will set up a web call within the next 3 weeks and hopefully you can participate. We are not asking you to contribute beyond input. Please DM me and I will add you to the invitees.

I'm off to bed while James continues! The backup transfer should complete by around 1AM, then the real migration and standup of the new server will take place.
If all goes super smooth, things might be up and running before I wake up around 8AM... or we might not. Fingers Crossed for smooth sailing and next updates in the morning!
