- @ZebKing has been chatting with Avi Lewis about a presence in the Fediverse — Mastodon.
- He requested assistance, looking for champions to bring politicians to Mastodon. Every new party leader on Mastodon is a win for digital sovereignty & an act of defence & patriotism for #Canada.
- Challenges for political parties and government officials to use #Mastodon:
1) Adoption by Canadians remains low. If a government agency researches the possible reach on the platform they will numbers rank well below other platforms.
2) Although it's getting easier, just getting started is still more difficult than alternatives.
- Suggestion for a strategy:
1) Make Mastodon a symbol that our government is reducing/eliminating reliance on U.S. controlled social media.
2) Get The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, who sets policy and guidelines on government use of social media, to add Mastodon to their policies, and potentially recommend Mastodon as the preferred platform.

Mastodon is showing me a "who to follow" widget and I checked out two profiles and they are people who haven't posted in a year or more. (One since 2022!)

Instead of the usual useless trivia and bad jokes, today I'm using my daily post to highlight an interesting interaction that I kinda inserted myself into late yesterday. It started as a discussion between @… and @…, who were talking about how to motivate politicians to join Mastodon. After I butted in, I also dragged @… into the conversation (sorry Chad). I'm going to summarize yesterday's thread, starting in part 2 below, but I've provided a link to the original if you wish to view it. I also encourage the original participants to fill in gaps, correct any errors (all mine), or add new material.
Ideas from the community at large are welcome. I'm including the #MastodonCanada tag to bring in others who have been providing tips specific to our geography.

There's a link to copy stuff to the clipboard and the stuff copied says "TypeError: can't access property "pending_requests_count", i.summary is undefined".
Most annoyingly, this happened while I was writing a post, which got lost.

After finishing up my timeline I refresh and there are a dozen more posts. That's not sustainable for a healthy social media diet (for me - YMMV!). Latest Pixelfed runs on an rpi5, latest Mastodon clients all get the same result: my acct on jazztodon always sees full photos in a mastodon client as do various Pixelfed clients, but reading the same post from mstdn.ca photos are often munged and no means to re-fetch.

just looking at my archive of postgresql backups over the past 2 years of my mastodon instance.
In December 2023 just shy of 1 year since spinning it up, the compressed gz file of the database was 600MB.
By Aug 2024 it was 988MB
In April 2025 it was 1500MB
Today it is 1800MB.
That is a 2 user instance. Not small!

I'm following almost 2000 accounts and while my feed is very much alive and buzzing, it feels like it doesn't really match my interests. It's too generic.

Perhaps one of my next projects is to set up a Mastodon instance (may be this one) on a cluster of 3 or more Raspberry Pi's. Still no exact imagination on how to distribute the different services in a meaningful manner. An example could be:
