The Macedonian village of Vevcani's carnival began over 1,400 years ago, beginning with old pagan traditions and slowly bringing in more motifs from Christianity and contemporary political satire over time. The festival parade finishes with the final burning of the masks, which symbolizes the destruction of evil spirits and the end of the year.
