This image captures a serene hiking trail winding through a lush, green meadow under a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. The path, made of dirt and small rocks, cuts through tall grass, inviting exploration. On either side, dense forests of tall evergreen trees frame the scene, their dark green foliage contrasting with the open, sunlit meadow. The perspective draws the viewer’s eye along the trail, creating a sense of depth and adventure. The vibrant colors—green grass, earthy to…

#Salzburg #Bluntau #nature #lake

The upper Bluntau lake photographed from the south from a low perspective. The water is greenish and has lots of small horizontal waves. In front, the water is clear and the stones and some branches below the surface are visible. In the back are trees, the ones on the sides closer making the water darker with their reflection broken by the waves. In the far back, mountains are visible.
The lower Bluntau lake with a very intense lime green tint. Three ducks and two fish can be seen swimming on and in the water. There is some dead wood in front, a small wooden house and some trees in the back, that are reflected in the water.
The lower Bluntau lake with a turquoise tint. On the left is fallen wood covered with moss, from which a new tree has grown, in the middle is a branch with red roots(?) where it touches the lake. On the front right is also dead wood in the lake, but without anything fancy to it. Some red leaves lie on the water in the front, one smaller and one larger fish can be seen a bit further back. In the back are trees reflected in the water.
The Torrenrache riverbed, with its water shimmering in the afternoon sun. There is not much water, the riverbed is full of white stones and a few with different colors. In the back are some trees.

Mexican pygmy grasshopper (Clypeotettix mexicanus) on the banks of the Mississippi River. Like many species in the Tetrigidae it grazes on stranded river algae, so that's why it was there. In related news they are fairly good swimmers compared to other grasshoppers, in part due to expanded hind tibiae. Apparently not uncommon to find them partly submerged and seemingly pretending to be frogs, complete with fake poison glands. Some species carry extra air below the pronotum so that they can stay submerged. Vacherie, Louisiana. #grasshoppers #algae #riparian #tetrigidae #insects #nature #louisiana #nature #macro

Dark ricefield mosquito (Psorophora columbiae) near the Mississippi River in Vacherie, Louisiana. Or at least I think that's what it is. The species can become so numerous after a flood that cows can die from exsanguination. #mosquito #diptera #nature #flies #louisiana #vacherie #blood

Common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) at the water bowl. I recently learned (minutes ago) that they collect fecal pellets from the their nests and drop them into birdbaths. This one is definitely looking guilty. #tmi #birds #grackles #nature #birdbath

Common liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) growing on the shady side of my house. The little cups are filled with wafer-shaped asexual buds called gemmae that get dispersed by rain droplets. The thallus is currently sending up reproductive structures so stay tuned for gender reveal (species is dioecious). #liverworts #plants #botany #nature #moss

Small (~1.25mm) wasp that I've been finding in large numbers on yarrow growing in my yard. I'll probably never be sure, but my guess is that it's Aprostocetus anodaphus (Eulophidae), an endoparasite of Ozirhincus millefolii (Cecidomyiidae), which I've found on the same inflorescences in equally large numbers. As far as I know it has never been reported in North America. Please go out and check for them if you have yarrow and a macro lens. #wasps #hymenoptera #yarrow #achillea #flies #parasite #nature #insects #macrophotography

#throwback: I don't know how long this conch has been in my family, but I've seen it since my childhood, generally used like once a year. 🐚
Some of the brown is inherent but the rest should come off if someone cared. Perhaps I should. 😔

The super common but super beautiful orchard orbweaver (Leucauge venusta). The genus name, courtesy Charles Darwin, means "with a bright gleam." The species epithet means "beautiful." Swarthmore, PA, USA. #spider #spiders #orbweaver #nature #silk #web #tetragnathidae

Pesticide companies love to imply that their pyrethroid sprays can magically target mosquitoes, sparing other insects that might be totally innocent. I think we need to push back by producing lawn signs that show that when Death arrives in his white van, nothing with an exoskeleton is spared. If I could draw, I'd add fireflies, plus make the background a nice suburban yard. So just a mock-up right now. #mosquitoes #nature #fireflies #insects #monarchs #butterflies #pesticides

Last fall I stuffed several hundred eastern redbud seeds into pharmaceutical gel caps, then waited for parasitic wasps to emerge so that I could take photographs. #blog #wasps #insects #parasites #nature #redbud #beetles #hymenoptera #macro #macrophotography #entomology colinpurrington.com/2026/06/wa

Was hoping this article in the New York Times would be about bats eating mosquitoes but I was wrong. Headline and a single sentence in the article were there to make bats seem like friends (they are, but not because of how many mosquitoes they eat, which is very few). Digital version [follow gift link] has a different headline. #bats #chiroptera #mosquitoes #nyc #newyork #insects #nature #biology #journalism #nytimes nytimes.com/2026/07/18/nyregio
