We have a daft dove that has decided to nest at one end of our guttering. I told it this was stupid. Today the skies opened, and the daft dove was sitting right under the gushing flow of water coming off the roof slates. It looked at me. I looked at it. Life is hard.

6.5kms morning walk today. Still 40% slower than normal but the goal was to increase distance while reducing discomfort, which I did by focusing on just walking; not looking around (which causes discomfort).
Got some nice pictures though. Same mountains and valleys as the last few days but in new settings and with some new elements.

I've been documenting the insects that emerge from eastern redbud seeds, and these two chalcids popped out today. On the left is Eurytoma sp. and on the right is Eupelmus pulchriceps. Both wasps hovered around me for a good 10 seconds or so after I blew them off. One came back and landed in the same spot. Fall cankerworm (Alsophila pometaria). If you have a moment to enlarge the image, check out the reduced 3rd proleg on the left-hand side of the loop, toward the bottom. Most lineages of the Geometridae have lost this A5 proleg completely, so this is very useful for identification. Fast-moving, arboreal caterpillars tend to have reduced numbers of prolegs. Allantus viennensis (Tenthredinidae) foraging for nectar on a peony flower bud. This is one of several sawfly species that spends its larval days defoliating my roses. They also eat Rubus so I'll be watching my blackberries and raspberries carefully. Houdini fly (Cacoxenus indagator) that I found near one of my insect hotels. Kleptoparasitic on mason bees *and* not native to the USA, so unwelcome. I've been experimenting with different types of tape to see whether I can remove them by trapping, but so far no joy. Still looking for the Goldilocks product that is tacky enough to snag small flies but doesn't affect the bees.
