In the 1980s as railroads abandoned thousands of miles of track following deregulation,
Congress provided for “#railbanking,” seeking to preserve rail corridors while allowing for interim use as trails.
Today, there are nearly 26,000 miles of rail-trails in the U.S., according to RTC.
• More than $830 million in U.S. Department of Transportation funds announced last week under the ⭐️R…

Here's a fun idea: let's ban #PKP #InterCity trains from one-track routes. I'm guessing that then, PKP PLK (the company responsible for railroad infrastructure, created in a vertical split of PKP, where apparently there's no problem that all the split companies belong to a single capital group and are corrupt) will suddenly find it justified to build a second track on lines such as Poznań - Kołobrzeg.
And even if they don't, there will at least be fewer sources of cascading delays.

Tell me I'm wrong: It's a scandal that there is a railway line within 200m of the busiest passenger ferry terminal in Canada and there is no rail based mass transit option to get to Vancouver.

A google map screenshot shows the ferry terminal on the left and the railway and road to the right separated by trees.

I appreciate Canada's railway system for its brutal honesty: yes, passengers' time is worth less than freight's time.

Oh for fuck's sake. I've really really tried to plan a July Europe holiday that minimises carbon footprint, uses #train etc.
Night train doesn't allow you to book very far in advance so there was no choice but to book the accommodation etc ahead. Calendar alarm tells me today's the day I can book the night train
:(

When you select the #Łódź Kaliska station on the "Portal Pasażera" timetable website, you get a "reconstruction" warning: "the walking time from platforms 1, 2, 3 to platforms 4 and 5 is approx. 15 minutes".
I think that #Poznań Główny would use a similar, permanent warning. "The walking time between platforms is approx. 15 minutes, provided you don't get lost".

The "Portal Pasażera" #Android app is truly a feat of engineering.
It's the official app of PKP PLK, the company overseeing polish railway network. It's the only app having access to the official timetable data with last minute updates and delay information. As a true monopoly, they protect this data to the point of harassing "competition" — and by competition, we mean people making free applications without ads.
But back to the topic. This is the app that you open you need to quickly look the departure time up, or check the train delay. However:
1. The previous instance manages to be killed by Android, for some reason.
2. It takes 20 seconds to start!
3. It decides that it's a perfect time to update station data.
4. It requires you to input all the data again.
5. In the meantime, you lose reception and can't fetch the data anymore.

The first photo is SA108-008 at Krzyż station. It just arrived from Złotów, and it will soon depart towards Piła. This one's operated by #PolRegio.
The second one is SA105-001 (first of the name) at Zbąszynek. It came from Leszna, and soon it will depart back. This cute train belongs to #KolejeWielkopolskie.

The train from Krzyż station to Kostrzyn station is actually travelling from the town of Krzyż Wielkopolski to the town of Kostrzyn nad Odrą. There is a town Kostrzyn (no suffixes) in Greater Poland and the station there is called Kostrzyn Wielkopolski (= roughly "from Greater Poland").
The train mentioned above also passes through the city of Gorzów Wielkopolski (both the city and the station uses that name), which happens to be one of the capital cities of Lubusz voivodeship, i.e. contrary to the name, it's administratively not a part of Greater Poland.

Another day, another person barely caught the train on #Poznań Główny station, because of the useless platform numbers and confusing markings.
The "new" train station features two adjacent doors, leading to the same staircase. Above one of them, the label says "platform 3". Above the other, it says "platform 4". How this can be anything but confusing? The most logical (and incorrect) conclusion is that one track belongs to platform 3, while the other to platform 4.

Polish railways have recently announced that they've signed a contract to repurpose the cargo #rail bypass of #Poznań to support passenger trains. It's supposed to be ready by the end of 2027 (so I'm going to sarcastically say, probably it'll be actually finished by 2030).
The relevant articles include only the list of new stops but not a map. However, I've been able to find one in an earlier announcement from December 2020, and it roughly seems to fit.
The whole thing is designed as a loop. I wonder how trains will be organized there. Will we have trains from Poznań Główny to Poznań Główny then?

While looking for a map for the #Poznań cargo #rail bypass passenger use plans, I found this goldie from 2015. Unfortunately, the image is pretty low quality and the original article seems to be gone.
Guess how many of the "planned" stations actually happened in these 10 years.
Curious enough, the map includes existing cargo stations, so some of the stations "planned" for the bypass according to the map I've posted earlier, are already "existing" here, except in slightly different locations.

Railways are where you may notice how the language preferences changed over the years. Sometimes in one place.
(there are also KD operator trains that include labels in czech)

Time for a story.
It was a few years ago, before the 354 railway line was renovated on the #Poznań#Piła section (or maybe during the renovation?). The time needed for a train to pass that distance was long enough that — given a good change — you could instead take a train to Krzyż, and change to Poznań there (using lines 203 351), and I've loved using that option when it meant I ended up being home at roughly the same time.
That day I was going to Poznań from someplace behind Piła, using Kołobrzeg — Poznań train. I didn't change to Krzyż, because it would mean being late for my change in Poznań, and getting home a bit later. Just a few minutes after leaving Piła, the train conductor came and announced that a "rail cracked" in Budzyń, and we will have to change into buses. I answered in a disheartened voice: "Why didn't you tell us before Piła? I would have changed into the Krzyż-bound train!"
So we've reached Budzyń, and we waited… because, as it turned out, the bus had to arrive from Piła. I think it took us to Rogoźno, where the next train was waiting for us. Overall, I think we've lost around 2 hours on that, or perhaps more.
If I took the Krzyż-bound train, I would have lost maybe half an hour… But these were the old days. Today, the trains from Piła reach Poznań much faster, and Krzyż rarely offers good changes.

For the second time, I've been waiting in Mokrz for the Kostrzyn — Poznań train, and an electric multiple unit #EN57 arrived. I have two theories.
The first one is that the Kostrzyn — Krzyż line has been electrified overnight.
The second one is that the iconic EN57 unit was converted into a hybrid.

The standard time for using the train toilet is one distance between consecutive stations.
Young 'uns probably can't guess where that unit came from. However, it still makes sense today, for other reasons.

A specific achievement: check off all the following train stops in a single journey:
#Poznań Dębiec
• Poznań Dębina
• Łódź Dąbrowa
(all the district names refer to the oak tree)
And I don't mind just passing through them, but actually getting off at Dębiec and taking the change at Dębina. It's roughly a 1 km walk over a non-colliding route, which is usually safer than running between platforms on the main station.

No such EMUs in Poznań anymore. Even in Wrocław I've only seen units with closed loop toilets.

The morning set of trains on #Krzyż station.
There's a #SU42 train engine with a "Bohun" two-floor car going to Kostrzyn. Also a Newag Impuls to Szczecin, and an EN57 on the side track (that will surely go to Poznań). If I waited a few more minutes, a SA108 would have appeared too.
